Volvo is all set to launch the S90 sedan in India later this year. This will be the Swedish manufacturer’s second launch this year, first being the S60 Cross Country. It will replace the Volvo S80 sedan in India. Although the launch is still a few months away, we have exclusive details on the pricing of the Volvo S90 sedan. According to sources, the Volvo S90 D4 trim will cost INR 57 lacs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Also, dealers have started accepting bookings for the upcoming sedan, which should arrive in showrooms by September – October 2016. Volvo S90 India Launch
Volvo is yet to announce a launch date for the S90 sedan in India. Based on information provided by our sources, the Volvo S90 India launch will take place by the end of September 2016 or early October 2016. Volvo the only luxury car manufacturer in India whose Diesel powered vehicles have not been affected by the ongoing Delhi Diesel ban. This is because they employ a 1969 cc Diesel engine. However, the Supreme Court might do away with the ban following subsequent hearings. With so much uncertainty surrounding the whole issue, it would be wise on Volvo’s part to launch the S90 as soon as possible. It will help them take advantage of the situation.

Volvo S90 India Price
As we mentioned earlier, the S90 range will start at INR 47 lacs (ex-showroom, Delhi). It will be available in two trims – D4 and D5.

The S90 will come to India as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) attracting high import duties. At the time of launch, only the diesel variants will go on sale. However, Volvo is evaluating the petrol versions for India as well. They could be launched in India at a later stage at a starting price of around 50 lacs.

The 1969 cc four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine will be available in two states of tune – 190 hp – 400 Nm Front-wheel Drive or 235 hp – 480 Nm all wheel drive. Both will come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is the same engine that powers the Volvo XC90 SUV in India. Petrol engine options could arrive in India at a later stage.

Powering the S90 is the same 2.0 L diesel that does duty on the XC90. Volvo claims an overall fuel efficiency of 17 kpl for the SUV. Therefore, the sedan should deliver more mileage. We’re expecting an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 19-10 kpl for the Volvo S90 sedan.

The design of the Volvo S90 is based on the Swedish manufacturer’s latest design language. We have already seen it on the XC90. It will also find its way to the V40 and V40 Cross Country facelift that will come to India this year.

Volvo S90 Design
Volvo’s latest design language dictates the styling of the new S90 sedan. It features a front end reminiscent of the new XC90 SUV that was launched in India in 2015. The signature Volvo front grille, full LED headlamps and Thor’s Hammer LED DRLs are the highlights of the nose. The tail is perhaps the most disticntive part of the design. Highlights include a sculpted boot lid and C-shaped taillights. The latter could have been a little sleeker. Overall, the design of the Volvo S90 is understated, yet elegant.
The above statement is true for the interiors as well. There is nice usage of light and dark materials around the cabin. Complementing the general theme are tastefully done silver and wood inserts. Dominating the centre console is an 8 inch touchscreen with vertical AC vents on either side. The dials are all digital. In all probability, Volvo will provide a choice of customization options such as choice of leather upholstery, sound system, etc.
