Best Mileage Cars in India with Prices, Specifications
1. Maruti Ciaz Diesel SHVS- 28.09 kmpl
Maruti’s mid-size sedan offering, the Ciaz sits at the top of the Best Mileage Cars in India list. It is the most fuel-efficient sedan on sale in India thanks to the utilisation of mild hybrid tech giving it an ARAI certified mileage of 28.09 kmpl. Although these figures are better than the segment leader, Honda City, the Ciaz hasn’t been able to match the City in terms of sales. Having said that, it still has been a successful model for Maruti Suzuki, a company which was not a popular choice among buyers in the slightly premium end of the spectrum.

2. Maruti Celerio Diesel DDiS 125- 27.62 kmpl
The Maruti Celerio Diesel brought with it a 2 cylinder, 793cc diesel motor, the smallest one powering a car in India and also the first of its kind developed by Suzuki. It returns a very healthy 27.62 kmpl. This makes it one of the best mileage cars in India. The engine produces just 47 bhp of power and 125 Nm torque, which the company claims is sufficient for the urban environment and that the lack of power will not be that evident. Based on our experience with the Celerio diesel we can say that although that claim is not entirely unsubstantiated, the lack of power is evident past the 80 km/h mark. And then there are the NVH levels which are not very car like.

3. Maruti Baleno Diesel– 27.39 kmpl
Rounding off the top three spots in our list of the best mileage cars in India is another Maruti. The Baleno shares its engine with the Swift/Dzire, but returns a higher mileage of 27.39 kpl thanks to a lower kerb weight. The car is marketed as a premium hatchback and is sold throuh the new Nexa sales channel. It was been very well received by the Indian car buying lot as evident from its strongly monthly sales and a waiting period of around 6 months.
4. New Model Honda Jazz Diesel– 27.3 kmpl
Honda has left no stone unturned for the Jazz’s second stint in India. This time around the Jazz is cheaper than before and comes with a diesel engine option as well. This diesel motor, shared with the Amaze, Mobilio and City, returns an ARAI certified mileage of 27.3 kmpl. Which makes it the third most fuel efficient car India, behind the Maruti Ciaz and Maruti Celerio diesel DDiS 125. The Jazz is a direct rival to Hyundai’s Elite i20, but, although it boasts of higher mileage figures, it hasn’t been able to match the i20’s popularity. The 1.5 litre iDTEC diesel motor powering the new model Honda Jazz is good for 100PS power and 200Nm torque, but it is let down by high NVH levels.

Tata is betting big on the Tiago as it hopes this new hatchback can help it claw back some of the market share they have lost over the years and being one of the Best mileage cars in India should definitely help.

7. Honda City Diesel– 26 kmpl
There are various reason for the popularity of the Honda City, one of the major ones being the very healthy mileage it returns. However, it misses out on entering the top 5 Best Mileage cars in India list by a small margin. The Maruti Ciaz managed to better the City’s figures, but only by a very small margin ensuring that the car remains at the top of the pile. And then there is the brand image the Honda City enjoys which has made it the pick of the segment amongst the Indian car buyers. The City domination seems unlikely to end.

Although it suffers from some refinement issues with customers complaining the diesel motor as a bit rough and due to poor sound insulation the noise filters through to the cabin, something which is a bit uncharacteristic of a Honda.
