Volkswagen India launched the new Ameo compact sedan to rival the likes of Dzire and Aspire last month. The Ameo is based on the highly successful Polo hatchback and is placed between its donor car and the Vento. The Volkswagen Ameo becomes VW India’s first offering to the Indian compact sedan market. The new Volkswagen compact sedan was unveiled prior to the Auto Expo 2016. The Ameo Compact Sedan comes in at a starting price of INR 5.14 lacs (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Volkswagen India started registering bookings for the Ameo last month. VW India also organized a roadshow for the Ameo across 17 cities to generate public interest. The Ameo is being produced at the manufacturer’s Pune facility and chances are that this new car will leave a sizable dent on the Dzire’s sales performance. Volkswagen India has just commenced deliveries of the new Ameo.

Being smaller and considerably less premium than the full-sized Vento, the Ameo holds a significant price advantage over the full-sized Polo-derived sedan. Volkswagen Vento Price range starts at roughly INR 5.14 Lakhs and goes all the way to INR 6.92 Lakhs for the petrol model. The manufacturer is yet to launched the Diesel variants. The Ameo plays the pricing game right with the Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent and the new Ford Figo Aspire. The Ameo does come across as a value for money proposition. Other than rivaling the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, the VW Vento-based compact sedan also competes with the Tata Zest, the Hyundai Xcent and the Honda Amaze.

Volkswagen Ameo Specifications
Powering the Ameo is the 1.2-litre petrol engine from the Polo. VW will also launch an updated 1.5-litre TDI Diesel variant in near future. Both these motors will come mated to a five-speed manual gearbox but the Diesel engine will also get a 7-Speed DSG. VW India has said that the Ameo offers best-in-segment safety features, build quality and superior drivability. The Volkswagen Ameo petrol model offers a fuel mileage of 17.83 kmpl while the Ameo Diesel could offer a mileage of up to 21 kmpl. The specifications, as can be seen in the tables below, will be identical to that of the Polo’s. For now, the Ameo will be available only with the 1.2 L Petrol engine. The Diesel variants will be launched later this year.

Volkswagen Ameo Boot Space- The Ameo is a compact sedan, hence, we never expected it to offer a huge boot space. The Vento has a boot space of 454 Litres. In comparison, the Ameo has a boot space of 330 litres. This makes the Ameo’s boot space some 15-litres higher than that of the Maruti Dzire.

Exterior
Much like most cars in this segment, the Volkswagen Vento compact sedan looks like a truncated version of the full-sized sedan. However, we feel the car looks a lot better proportioned than most of its rivals. It shares its front end with the Polo hatchback and the rear end follows the same design language we’ve seen on other VW products. Even the side profile is similar, but the difference arises owing to the inclusion of a small boot. Overall, it is one of the better-looking cars in its segment.

Interior
On the inside, the Ameo gets almost the same cabin as the Polo. This means there’s adequate space for four adults. While seating five might be a bit of a squeeze, the comfort levels are at par with the rivals. The interior comes draped in high-quality materials. The panels, the switches, everything has a premium appeal to it. In terms of features, the Ameo is easily the best in its class.

We were the first to report that the Ameo launch will take place in mid-2016. As we have been saying, the Ameo is an important launch for both the market and the manufacturer. VW India has invested over INR 720 Crores for the design and development of the Ameo. The Ameo will be produced at the manufacturer’s Chakan plant near Pune, Maharashtra.
Speaking about the Ameo, Mr. Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said, “Today is a very special day for Volkswagen in India, as we introduce our first ever made-for-India carline, Volkswagen Ameo. The Ameo underlines our philosophy of offering the best of technology and safety standards packaged at an attractive price. Through the Ameo, we are confident of cementing Volkswagen’s strong presence in the compact sedan segment and further expand the Volkswagen India family.”
Andreas Lauermann, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India has told PTI that his company’s manufacturing plant will now produce 15 percent more cars this year. The boost in production numbers is courtesy of the Ameo. The Ameo becomes the first-ever lower-C segment sedan from VW India. It plugs the gap between the Polo and the Vento. The Ameo has been priced really aggressively and is currently the cheapest offering from VW India.
The Ameo, however, does benefit from VW’s strengths like good build quality, potent engines, and well-balanced ride and handling manners. It has gone on sale with only a 1.2-litre Petrol engine that comes mated to a 5-speed Manual gearbox. The Ameo scores well in terms of interior space. Five adults might be a squeeze, but for a car targeted at premium hatchbacks, the Ameo’s cabin is suitable spacious.
