Tata Kite 5 Compact Sedan
First on our list of upcoming small cars in India under 6 lakhs is the Kite 5. The newly launched Tiago hatchback will be joined by a compact sedan sibling by the end of 2016 or early 2017. Showcased at the Auto Expo in Feb under the Kite 5 moniker, the compact sedan will be positioned below the Zest. It will become the cheapest car in its segment when it arrives in showrooms. It will share engines with the Tiago. Expect prices to start at around INR 3.8 lacs.

Tata Tiago AMT
Tata will automatic transmission variants to the Tiago lineup in the coming months. Initially, only the petrol Tiago will get the 5-speed AMT. Diesel variants with the AMT will come along later. Pricing, akin to the manual Tiago, will be very aggressive. Tiago AMT will compete with the Maruti Celerio AMT and Wagon R AMT.

Renault Kwid 1.0 L AMT
Like Tata, Renault will also add automatic variants to its popular new hatchback. The Kwid AMT will feature a new 1.0 L engine that is more powerful than the 0.8 L petrol. This new automatic transmission will be a 5-speed AMT unit as seen at the Auto Expo in February. Kwid AMT features a gear selector knob placed below the aircon controls. Expect prices to start at around Rs. 4.5 lakhs.

Maruti Ignis
Next on our list of upcoming small cars in India under 6 lakhs is the Ignis mini-SUV. Another concept that was on display at the Auto Expo. Maruti Suzuki will launch the mini SUV in early 2017. It will be positioned as a micro-SUV and will be sold through the Nexa sales channel. In all likelihood, it will draw power from a 1.2 L petrol and 1.3 L diesel engine that will be similar in terms of specifications to the Maruti Swift/Dzire/Baleno.

And GM recently released images of the production-ready model.Expect a launch in early 2017.

Hyundai enters the list of upcoming small cars in India under 6 lakhs with the 2017 Grand i10. Hyundai’s popular Grand i10 hatchback is all set to receive a facelift soon. The updates will be similar to the ones we have seen on the new 2017 Hyundai i10 for Europe. It will get a new nose featuring a new grille and bumpers. There will also be a new rear bumper and minor updates to the interiors.

2017 Maruti Swift
The popular Swift hatchback looks set to get a replacement next year in the form of the next generation model. The 2017 Swift will make its debut in March next year and should make it to India before the end of 2017. It will employ the same engines as the current model, but the diesel variants will benefit from Maruti‘s mild hybrid tech. Prices will increase slightly to around INR 4.8 lakhs for the base model.

Toyota recently introduced facelifted versions of the Etios twins in India. They feature cosmetic updates to the front end and changes to the interiors. The Etios Liva facelift gets a new, sportier nose, new alloys and a new instrument console. Engine options remain the same. Prices start at Rs. 5.24 lakh for the base petrol variant.
