The Volkswagen Golf is getting ready for a facelift before the end of this year and our spy photographers have spotted the car out testing in fast and roomy Golf R Estate guise.
Visibile on this test car are some C-shaped inserts around the headlights, that are likely to be using some new LED tech. There's also a larger air intake at the bottom of the front bumper, but the diguise means any new look for the intakes is hidden at the moment. It looks like the rear bumper has a sharper design, although the rest of the rear of the car is unchanged - those distinctive twin exhausts on each side remain.
The facelifted Golf R is likely to get a few interior updates, such as an upgrade for the infotainment system and some new upholstery options. Don't expect anything revolutionary, though. Likewise, the engine in the Golf R will remain as a 2.0-litre turbocharrged petrol, but it's possible that it could get a small power boost over the 296bhp it has in the current version.
This facelifted mk7 model might be poised to see the light of day in 2016 but there's also an all-new Golf model due in the next couple of years, with the Mk8 version of the evergreen family hatchback set to appear in 2018. The next Golf will be lighter and more efficient than ever, with an R version likely to follow, but there's still plenty of life left in the current version.
At the moment the Golf R Estate has 380Nm of torque, and goes from 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds - and all with 605 litres of boot space in the back. Expect to see an updated version of both hatch and Estate before the end of 2016, with the range starting from around £31,000.
