New Toyota Fortuner Launch in India

November 2016

Toyota India recently gave confirmation that the new Fortuner will come to India in the first week of November 2016. Although it was earlier being reported the Fortuner will not come before 2017, that is clearly not the case. Dealers are currently accepting bookings and deliveries should commence soon after the launch in November.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor India has been testing the Fortuner on Indian public roads. The manufacturer earlier showed displeasure with NGT’s ban on Diesel cars powered by engines displacing 2000cc or above. However, Supreme Court recently lifted this ban paving the way for the launch of the new 2016 Fortuner in India.

According to our sources, top end trims of the Fortuner will cost well over Rs. 30 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect prices to start at about Rs. 28 lakh for the base diesel variants with a manual transmission. There will also be petrol variants featuring a 2.7 L engine. In Australia, where the new Fortuner is already on sale, the prices start at around Rs 24 lakh.

As already said by us, the 2016 Fortuner is underpinned by an all-new ladder-frame chassis and is powered by a set of all-new ‘GD’ four-cylinder diesel engines that are greener, more powerful and more frugal than the current motors. Engines from the ‘GD’ series comprise of 2.4 litre and 2.8-litre turbocharged units that boast of “Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion (ESTEC)” technology and a variable geometric turbocharger. However, it is likely to be available with only the bigger 2.8 litre unit that pumps out 177 PS and 360 Nm. In a first for the Fortuner in India, it will also receive a 2.7 litre petrol engine.
