The number of pocket-friendly automatics is increasing steadily. Presently, an AMT equipped vehicle can be had for less than 3 lakhs. Maruti Celerio was the car that heralded in the AMT technology and paved the way for multiple models from different manufacturers. Renault Kwid AMT
First on our list of upcoming AMT cars in India is the Renault Kwid AMT. The recently launched Renault Kwid 1.0 will get an AMT by the end of 2016. Kwid has already become a massive success for the French car maker. The introduction of the 1000cc Kwid and the AMT variants will help take the fight to the Alto K10. The Renault Kwid’s USPs include its crossover like appearance, space on offer, features and an attractive price tag.

Tata Tiago AMT
Next on our list of upcoming AMT cars in India is the Tata Tiago AMT. Tata launched the manual variants of the Tiago in March 2016. It has been doing well in terms of sales thanks to its good looks, a strong set of features and attractive pricing. Initially, we expect the Tiago AMT to be available only with the 1.2 L petrol engine. Diesel variants of Tiago likely to get a 5-speed AMT by early 2017.

Tata Kite 5 AMT
Tata is yet to launch the sedan derivative of the Tiago hatchback in India. It is still unclear whether the compact sedan will come with an AMT right from the time of launch or if it will be added to the lineup later. A diesel engine mated with an AMT could make the Kite 5 the cheapest and the most frugal diesel automatic sedans on sale and give it an edge over the competition.

Maruti Ignis AMT
The upcoming Ignis micro SUV will feature a 5-speed AMT gearbox apart from the standard 5-speed manual transmission. It will come mated to the 1.2 L Petrol engine that will power the Maruti Ignis. The diesel variant of the car will not get the 5-speed AMT, at least initially. Expect the new Ignis to land in Nexa dealerships in early 2017 or by the end of 2016. Prices might start at around Rs. 5 lakh for the base petrol variant.

Renault Lodgy AMT
Next up on our list of upcoming AMT cars in India is the Renault Lodgy MPV. Following a strong start, the MPV has been struggling in the market. Adding an automatic transmission option could give sales a slight push. Renault already offers the new Duster with a 6-speed AMT and this same gearbox will find its way into the Lodgy as well. It will be available in the RxL and RxZ trims. Expect the Renault Lodgy AMT to cost around Rs. 11-12 lakhs.

It is being reported that Maruti will launch an AMT equipped variant of the popular Vitara Brezza SUV. Currently available with only a 5-speed manual, the Vitara Brezza is likely to get the AMT automatic option in early 2017. It will be available with the current 1.3 L diesel engine and should return a healthy mileage of around 24 kpl. Once launched, it will rival the likes of the Mahindra NuvoSport and Mahindra TUV300 AMT variants.

Mahindra TUV300
Mahindra‘s latest offering comes equipped with a 5-speed AMT. It is aimed at the Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta and the likes. The TUV300 is butch looking SUV offering space for 7, a decent list of features and a competitive price. The TUV300 is the first of multiple Mahindra products which will utilise this technology in the future.

Mahindra NuvoSport
Mahindra launched the facelifted version of the Quanto earlier this year. Christened NuvoSport, Mahindra has thoroughly revised the product. One of the updates made to the Xylo derivative is the addition of an AMT unit similar to the one on the TUV300. Prices start at Rs. 9.12 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the AMT variants.

Maruti Swift Dzire
India’s most popular compact sedan, the Maruti Dzire, got an AMT equipped version early this year. The Dzire automatic comes with a 5-speed AMT unit, similar to the one doing duty in the Celerio. The only other diesel automatic on offer in the segment is the Tata Zest. Like the Dzire, it also comes with a 5-speed AMT mated to the 1.3-litre multijet diesel shared by Dzire and the Zest. It is available only in the top of the line ZDi trim at Rs. 8.58 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

Maruti Wagon R
After receiving a tremendous response to the Celerio AMT, Maruti decided to equip multiple products in its portfolio with this technology.
