Level four and five autonomy on the agenda for Audi, with updated e-tron Sportback and new D-segment concept

Audi has confirmed that it will reveal two new concept cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show, both of which spell out the firm’s ambitions for an autonomous future with level four and five autonomy.

The firm’s level four autonomous study is a new coupe SUV measuring 4.90 metres in length and will be based on the e-tron Sportback concept introduced at the Shanghai Motor Show back in April. As such, it’s another preview of Audi’s upcoming all-electric coupe SUV, which will be released before the end of the decade.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 preview

Audi says that much of the styling of the e-tron Sportback concept will be carried over into this newer vision of its 2019 EV, while under the skin it will boast the same tri-motor all-electric powertrain with 496bhp.

Under the spotlight in Frankfurt will be the new autonomous systems fitted to the concept, making use of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The concept will be kitted with next-generation computer architecture, referred to as zFAS. Audi says that with the new systems on board, the car will at the very least be able to drive itself on motorway style roads at speeds up to 80mph, with automatic lane changes.

The second concept car takes things one-step further to full autonomy, and has been teased ahead of its Frankfurt debut. Audi says that this as yet unnamed concept sits in the D-segment, is powered by four electric motors and boasts a range of between 435 and 497 miles. With full autonomy on board, the firm says that the concept car’s interior boasts new connectivity and communication features, designed to make travelling more comfortable for occupants who no longer have to concentrate on the road.

We’ll get to see both concepts in the metal at the show tomorrow, alongside the all-new A8. A new rear-wheel-drive R8 Coupe is on the cards too, according to teasers.
