The Ford F-150 Raptor is about as extreme as trucks get. Built for flying across sand, traversing dunes, and descending hillsides like a mountain goat, the Raptor is one of very few trucks that can compete in the Baja 1000, then drive home like it made a leisurely trip visiting the in-laws.
The truck comes stock with a 450-horsepower 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which offers plenty of punch to get out ahead of traffic or even leave most cars in the dust. It’s massive, too. The Raptor is 6.4 inches wider than the already huge F-150 and 1.3 inches taller. At 78.5 inches high, good luck getting this thing into your garage at home or into many urban parking garages.
In fact, good luck even finding a large enough space at the grocery store.
This truck isn’t made for parking, though. It’s for mountain men (suburban dads) who need a macho desert-runner (grocery-getter) to stand out from the crowd.
However, for some folks, the stock Raptor just isn’t macho enough. Enter the Shelby Raptor.
Yes, the same Shelby that made a name for itself customizing Mustangs is now in the truck business and will happily sell you a customized Raptor for just a hair over $117,000. Considering a base Raptor from Ford costs about $50,000, what would buyers get for that extra cash?
Once Shelby is done massaging the Raptor, the truck gains 75 hp to put it over 525 and a massive 610 lb-ft of torque. Shelby Raptors also get suspension upgrades with a two-stage shock system. The truck also gets bigger wheels and tires, along with interior and exterior style upgrades.
Shelby President Gary Patterson said,
The Shelby Raptor is harder edged, with more grunt and handling capability. We added adjustable shocks so the driver can even tailor their ride. This truck was designed and tested for those who seek maximum adventure both on and off the road.
Only 500 copies of the 2018 Shelby Raptor will be produced. For people who already have a 2017 Raptor on hand, Shelby will make the same modifications for $49,295.
Buying a stock Ford Raptor is a pretty good deal, but would you fork over the cash for a Shelby Raptor?
