Ken Block, the automotive icon and man behind DC shoes, has dropped an all new video which features him behind the wheel the extensively modified Ford Mustang (affectionately known as the ‘Hoonicorn’) tearing up the world famous Pikes Peak hillclimb.
As ever, there is an eclectic mix of handbrake turns, exhaust pops, and incredible car control that millions of petrol heads across the world have come to love. However, unlike the similarly styled Gymkhana videos, there is the ever present danger of flying off the side of a cliff in a cloud of dust and tyre smoke.
While he manages to get to the top in the Mustang, the trip is not without drama. In particular, Mr Block becomes all too familiar with the narrow gravel channel right on the edge of one corner, before being confronted by a collection of oncoming agricultural machinery which looks like it would make mincemeat of everything from onions to high-performance Mustangs.
Speaking of the Mustang, its specs deserve a mention. Under the hood there is a twin-turbo 6.7-litre V8 which runs at 21 pounds of boost and uses methanol as fuel. This means it has 1,400 horsepower at the crank and as such, goes through tyres like nothing else. Ken Block himself said, “...this [the Hoonicorn] is the absolute most frightening thing I’ve ever driven, I’m not exaggerating. AT ALL. The motor revs and spins my Toyo tires to destruction so quickly that I can’t change the gears fast enough. It’s genuinely a mind-numbing, crazy experience to try to drive this thing. It’s amazing."
The Climbkhana video has come off the back of nine highly successful Gymkhana videos and also a recent Terrakhana video. In the former, Mr Block drives high-power all-wheel-drive cars (including a Subaru Impreza WRX, Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus RS RX) around urban environments which normally include a healthy amount of closed public roads.
The Terrakhana video was a bit different, and saw the playground move to the dusty backyard of Swing Arm City, Utah. Here Ken put his air filter to the test drifting around boulders and climbing up sand covered rock formations.
