The next generation Mercedes Sprinter van is nearly with us and the brand has given us our first official look at the design.

New Mercedes Sprinter sketch

This is our first look at the new Mercedes Sprinter, previewed in an official design sketch ahead of its unveiling at the North American Commercial Vehicle Show. It will arrive in UK showrooms during the first half of next year.

Mercedes has confirmed the Sprinter will usher in a whole host of new driver assistance systems such as Adaptive ESP and Crosswind assist, breaking each wheel independently to prevent the van from rolling. A range of bodystyles have also been confirmed; expect there to be a twin-cab, panel cab and tourer within the range.

Official engine details are a little thin on the ground but we’d expected engine options to be carried over from the current model, meaning that four-cylinder and V6 diesel engines should be offered.

Only one image of the Sprinter has been issued revealing a sharper front end with aggressive LED headlights separated by a black grille holding the Three-Pointed-Star. However, while the front bumpers have been altered, the definitive tall elongated boxy shape remains. The new van bears some resemlance to the Mercedes Vision Van concept revealed in 2016 that previewed some of the advanced technology that is set to appear in the production model.

Since the introduction of the Sprinter in 1995, more than 3.3 million units have been delivered in over 130 countries. The van set a new sales record when total sales increased to around 96,200 units in the first half of 2017.

Mercedes has chosen to unveil the new Sprinter at the North American Commercial Vehicle show in Atlanta, as it will be produced at Mercedes’ new manufacturing facility in North Charleston. The USA is also one of the World’s fastest growing van markets with the second largest individual sales for the large panel vans behind Germany.
