Kia's Picanto city car gets a crossover inspired makeover with new X-Line trim, to be presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show

Kia has revealed that it will add a soft-roader to the Picanto line-up with a crossover inspired version of its city car, called the Picanto X-Line. It’ll make its full debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, before going on sale in Britain later this year.

The car’s crossover credentials are fleshed out by chunky looking black plastic cladding, faux bash plates underneath the front and rear bumpers, plus a raised ride height – with a ground clearance of 156m, it rides 15mm taller than standard versions of the Picanto.

Contrasting colour packs, introducing bright splodges of colour around the car’s exterior, round off the design tweaks - silver or lime green finishes are available on the grille and fog lamp surrounds.

Under the bonnet, the Picanto X-Line gets a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit, producing 99bhp and 172Nm of torque. It’s the first time the new generation 1.0-litre T-GDI engine has been fitted in the Picanto, unlocking a 0-62mph time of 10.1 seconds, plus claimed fuel economy of 62.8mpg with tailpipe emissions of 104g/km CO2.

Kia intends to roll out the 1.0 T-GDI to GT Line specification versions of the Picanto too, however, no timeline has been issued regarding this. We’ll see the new Picanto X-Line in showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2017.
