New Maruti S-Cross Facelift To Launch with 1.3-litre Diesel Hybrid Only

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, the country’s largest-selling car manufacturer, is about to launch the S Cross facelift. The updated version of the crossover comes with many styling updates along with a handful of additional features. Currently, the S-Cross is available with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre Diesel engines. In a recent development, it has come to light that the upcoming new Maruti S Cross facelift will miss out on the 1.6-litre motor. The current 1.3-litre engine will continue but will come with SHVS mild-hybrid technology. This should boost this crossover’s mileage substantially. Prices of the new model are likely to start at Rs 8 lakh.

Many authorized Maruti Suzuki dealerships have already started accepting bookings for the new model. However, the official bookings are yet to start. Until now, speculations were rife that the SCross facelift will offer three engines – 1.5-litre Petrol, 1.3-litre Diesel, 1.6-litre Diesel. However, it now looks like the crossover will come only with the 1.3 MJD. We are yet to find out the reason for the exclusion of the more powerful engine. Well, the bigger engine was being imported to the country, thereby pushing the cost northwards to quite an extent. MSIL could have decided to discontinue the top-end variant owing to low demand. Maruti assembles the 1.3 MJD under license locally. This helps the manufacturer price its cars competitively.

For the 2017 facelift of the S Cross, this Fiat-sourced engine gets the company’s SHVS mild hybrid technology. While this will boost the mileage to quite an extent, let’s not forget that it will bring the S Cross under the ‘hybrid cars’ category. This will, in turn, lead to the car coming under a higher GST tax slab. Earlier this year, the Ciaz Diesel SHVS hybrid saw a huge hike in prices owing to this very reason. We are still wondering if the manufacturer would be able to circumnavigate its way around the higher tax slab. The 1.3-litre MJD Diesel engine outputs a maximum power of 89 BHP at 4,000 RPM and a peak torque of 200 Nm at 1,750 RPM. The motor comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

The new Maruti S Cross facelift 2017 is already on sale in several markets abroad. The India-spec model will look much like the car on sale internationally. It may be noted here that the S Cross hasn’t really been able to set the sales charts on fire. The upcoming facelift will try to change this by offering more mileage, more features, and a fresher styling. The front fascia of this facelift looks bolder and more modern. It comes with a new radiator grille, updated bumper, and new headlights. The headlights carry a projector setup along with LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs). The car will also come with a set of new design alloy wheels and revised taillights.

Talking about the interior, the new Maruti S Cross facelift will get an updated 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that will support both Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink and Android Auto. The dashboard will be updated, too. Even the instrument console will be new and is likely to offer a larger Multi Information Display (MID). Apart from all this, the interior will also offer a new upholstery. The slightly updated interior, along with the comprehensively updated exterior, should enhance the appeal of this crossover by at least some margin. Here are all the available details on this upcoming Maruti car in India.

New Maruti S Cross Facelift Launch Date

Launch Date (expected) October 2017

While Maruti is yet to make an official announcement regarding the launch of the SCross facelift, we are pretty sure it will happen in October this year. Maruti has organized a test drive of the 2017 S Cross for us later this month. This is another hint that the launch date isn’t’ too far in the offing. The company has been pretty quick in bringing the updated model to us. Unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in October last year, the updated S Cross will be here very soon.

New Maruti S Cross Facelift Price in India

Maruti S-Cross 1.3 Diesel Sigma Rs. 8.50 Lakh
Maruti S-Cross 1.3 Diesel Delta Rs. 11 Lakh

Our guess is that the prices of the new 2017 S Cross will start at roughly Rs 8.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Thanks to the discontinuation of the 1.6-litre model, the most expensive model in the new SCross lineup will cost roughly Rs 11 lakh. The facelift will be slightly costlier than the current model. Currently, the S-Cross price range starts at roughly Rs 7.90 lakh. However, the updated model will cost significantly more. This will be mainly due to the fact that the 2017 model of the crossover will qualify as a hybrid, and hence, attract the highest tax rate.

New Maruti S Cross Facelift SHVS Mileage

City 20 KMPL
Highway 27 KMPL
Overall 23 KMPL

Thanks to the addition of SHVS mild hybrid technology, the S Cross facelift will offer a higher mileage than the current model. Out on the highway, we expect the updated car to offer more than 27 KMPL. In the city, the car will offer roughly 20 KMPL. Overall, the car will offer an average mileage of roughly 27 KMPL. The increase in mileage will be solely a result of the SHVS mild hybrid technology.

Basically, Maruti’s Smart Hybrid Vehicle System (SHVS) aids the engine through a brake energy regeneration and an Integrated Starter Generator. So, basically, the energy produced while applying brakes is changed into electricity through this generator. This electricity is then stored in the battery, which in turn is used to power the alternator. In such a system, the alternator isn’t dependent on the engine for power. Hence, this leads to a slight increase in the car’s average mileage.

New Maruti S Cross Facelift SHVS Engine and Gearbox

In most international markets, the S Cross is on sale with two Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engines – 1.0-litre, three-cylinder and 1.4-litre, four-cylinder. Yes, this is the same 1.0-litre engine that powers the Baleno RS. Anyway, coming back to the S Cross, these motors output 112 BHP-170 Nm and 140 BHP-220 Nm respectively. Both the motors offer two transmission options- 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. ALLGRIP All Wheel Drive system is available as an option on the 1.4-litre Boosterjet variant. The Diesel engine on sale is the same Fiat-sourced 1.6-litre Turbo-Diesel motor that has been available in India as well. This motor produces a maximum power of 120 BHP and a peak torque of 320 Nm. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and a DCT and ALLGRIP AWD as optional in Europe. In India, it gets a 6-speed manual gearbox only.

With the facelift, however, the 1.6-litre engine will be no longer available. The updated car will go on sale with the 1.3-litre turbo Diesel engine only. This engine produces 89 BHP and 200 Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Until now, speculations were rife that the India-spec model will also get a 1.5-liter Petrol engine that outputs 100 BHP-133 Nm. However, it now looks like India will get only the 1.3-litre Diesel engine. The good part is that this engine will now offer Maruti’s SHVS mild hybrid technology. This should lead to a substantial increase in the car’s mileage.
