Porsche has taken the edge of its 911 GT3 track weapon with the 'purist's' GT3 Touring

Porsche has revealed what it’s touting as a new ‘purist’ 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the form of a new 911 GT3 variant.

Named the 911 GT3 Touring, it sits alongside its more aggressive regular GT3 and GT3 RS siblings at the sharpest end of the 911 range, as a toned down, more basic version of the latest 991.2 911 GT3 unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show back in March.

Visually, it’s easy to tell the Touring apart from the GT3 it’s based on – the large rear wing has been replaced with a cleaner looking engine cover with a black mesh ventilation grille, though a retractable spoiler still hides away over the rear axle. GT3 Touring badging also marks it out as the less flamboyant member of the GT3 family.

Elsewhere, the GT3 Touring borrows its looks from the regular GT3, with aggressive looking bumpers front and rear, wider wheel arches and 20-inch forged alloy wheels. As such, it’s very nearly a ringer for the ultra-exclusive 911R.

Sitting at the rear is a 4.0-litre flat-six engine producing 493bhp – again, no change compared to the regular GT3. However, the Touring will only be available with a six-speed manual gearbox, with no dual-clutch automatic PDK option.

As such, Porsche claims 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds if you can shift quick enough. Top speed comes in at 196mph.

Under the skin, the GT3 Touring receives a rear-wheel-steering system, a torque vectoring limited-slip differential, plus the same dampers and tweaked chassis as the GT3. For more changes, you’ll have to look in the cabin.

The GT3 Touring boasts a pared down interior without the bells and whistles of the GT3 and GT3 RS models. As such, leather sports seats with fabric centres are matched with a simple leather steering wheel and a plainer looking dashboard. It’s still a two-seat model though.

The options list is fairly extensive, meaning bucket seats, carbon ceramic brakes and the Sport Chrono pack will all be available on the Touring, but Alcantara interior trim and a roll cage remain off limits. It’ll be priced from £111,802 when it hits showrooms, matching the list price of the regular GT3.
