MINI has revealed a race-inspired John Cooper Works GP concept ahead of its official debut at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s not the only concept MINI will unveil at the show, as another EV concept will also take to the stage.
It hints at a third example of MINI’s limited-run GP series where only 2,000 examples of each model were produced. The concept is described by the British brand as “driving fun in its purest form,” with design elements borrowed from motorsport.
It’s the most aggressive version of the MINI we’ve seen yet, with a significantly wider body and track, big front air intakes and a chunky, carbon-fibre front splitter. Flared wheelarches, a prominent rear wing, carbon-fibre side skirts and lightweight 19-inch wheels also feature, as do red and orange exterior highlights.
MINI says carbon fibre has also been incorporated into the design to help reduce weight, while the 0059 sticker on the flanks refers to the year the classic Mini was born: 1959.
Inside, the cabin has been stripped back to its bare essentials where deep bucket seats with a five-point race harness have been added. The rear bench, headliner and door trims have all been ditched to shed weight and a roll cage has been added. A head-up display gives vital info, while suspension settings are controlled through the touchscreen.
There is no official word on a production model, but the bare interior and wild exterior styling is likely to be toned down slightly for any forthcoming showroom model.
