Toyota's large SUV gets updated with fresh looks inside and out, plus new tech

Toyota has taken the opportunity to introduce a facelifted Land Cruiser SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with an updated design, a refreshed interior, plus new safety and infotainment technology.

In terms of appearances, a new bonnet, front bumper, fresh headlights with daytime LED running lights, depending on market and spec, plus a redesigned grille freshen up the Land Cruiser’s face. In profile, the car looks different thanks to a taller front bumper plus realigned wing lines and bumpers, all on the same horizontal axis. The new bodywork means that the facelifted Land Cruiser is 60mm longer than the outgoing model.

Around the back, fresh taillights make an appearance alongside a new rear bumper. Six-spoke alloy wheels will be available in sizes of 17 or 18-inches, and a new 12-spoke 19-inch wheel design will also be offered.

Toyota claims that the interior has taken a step up in terms of quality. The dashboard has been redesigned and boasts a new instrument binnacle and centre console layout, with fresh and re-organised switchgear. LED ambient lighting also makes the cut.

A new Touch 2 eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system has been introduced, while a 4.2-inch TFT screen is wedged between the dails in the instrument panel. The steering wheel is also new, and is shared with the V8 powered land Cruiser.

New safety technology from Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of driver assists is available, but is fitted to high-grade models as standard. The package includes a pre-collision warning system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and automatic high-beam. A blind spot monitoring system and rear cross traffic alert is also available.

Under the bonnet things remain unchanged. That means a global line-up consisting of a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol and a range topping 4.0-litre V8. UK buyers will continue to be offered the 2.8-litre diesel unit only, producing 174bhp and 450Nm of torque – 420Nm if equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox.
