Uber will not be issued a new private hire operator licence in London once its current licence expires on 30 September, Transport for London has confirmed.

TfL said in a statement that the ride-hailing app is not “fit and proper” to hold a private hire operator licence. It also says that Uber’s “approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility,” in relation to the reporting of criminal offences and driver background checks.

Uber has 21 days to appeal the decision and are able to operate as normal until any appeal process has been exhausted, according to the TfL. It’s understood the company will appeal the decision immediately.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said in a statement: “I fully support TfL’s decision - it would be wrong if TfL continued to licence Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners’ safety and security.

“All companies in London must play by the rules and adhere to the high standards we expect - particularly when it comes to the safety of customers. Providing an innovative service must not be at the expense of customer safety and security.”

Uber has around 3.5 million users in London and employs roughly 40,00 licenced drivers. The company operates in another 40 towns and cities in the UK and further 600 cities around the world.
