Mazda has presented its Vision Coupe concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. It’s a long and eye-catching four-door coupe hinting to the future of Mazda design.
Among many of Mazda’s exhibits, including the new KAI concept, the four-door Vision Coupe bares a silhouette not dissimilar to the recently revealed Audi A7 and forthcoming Mercedes CLS. There is no word yet on potential production feasibility.
No powertrain details have been revealed, either, other than the fact that it will be front rather than rear or all-wheel-drive, with the engine housed under the very long bonnet.
The Vision Coupe is a simple canvas designed to showcase the updated Kodo ‘less is more’ design language. It sits alongside the next-generation Mazda 3-inspired KAI hatchback as a dramatic interpretation of the brand’s future direction.
All non-essential ripples, folds and creases in the bodywork have been removed to create a long, smooth shape, and a signature side reflection that runs the length of the car. It starts at the front wheel and flows down the shoulderline, flaring out dramatically at the rear axle. Quad exhausts complete the look, housed beneath the aggressive rear bumper.
The cabin mimics the KAI concept by making use of a similar horizontal layout, with a wide infotainment display hidden inside a deep fold. However, Mazda has pushed the boat out with plusher materials, as well as wooden veneers on the centre console and the door panels.
The Vision Coupe is part of a range of Mazda cars displayed at this year’s Tokyo exhibit. Amidst the futuristic designs such as the RX-Vision, Mazda has also showcased a lightly-revised MX-5 Roadster, as well as the all-new Japan-only CX-8 crossover.
