Many of the new housing estates and offices being built in London will be subject to a parking ban on private cars, the Mayor of London is expected to announce today.
According to The Times, London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, is expected to confirm that hundreds of new housing developments and office buildings will have no parking facilities for cars owned by people who live there.
• London T-charge pollution zone has arrived and will grow in 2019
The announcement is said to form part of the Mayor’s draft London Plan to tackle air pollution and protect the Green Belt. The Mayor is also expected to announce that facilities which will have parking spots for cars and other vehicles, must contain charging facilities for electric vehicles. However, the number of disabled parking bays would not be reduced in these car-free zones.
The Mayor is hoping to see a rise in the number of cyclists on the capital’s streets and the draft plan is expected to announce a target of ensuring 70 per cent of people will live within 400 metres of a segregated cycle route by 2041.
The draft London Plan also includes guidelines for increasing London’s green infrastructure to protect the Green Belt. The guidelines make it clear that green infrastructure must form an integral part of new developments, rather than an ‘add-on’, and will be judged against a number of criteria, including promoting wellbeing, enhancing biodiversity and improving air and water quality.

Khan said: "I firmly believe we can build the homes Londoners need without sacrificing the Green Belt. This will mean more development on brownfield land, town centres becoming denser, incorporating more green infrastructure in our streets and developments and being more creative with how we develop the hundreds of small sites across the capital.”
