If you are a regular follower of the Indian automotive news, you must be aware that Maruti Suzuki is currently working on a generation update for its entry-level hatchback, the Alto. This vehicle has been a leader in its segment since a long time, despite the introduction of new models and tougher competition. The Alto has enjoyed Maruti’s un-questionable brand image right from its inception.Furthermore, it also, in itself, comes as a genuine and value for money proposition for an entry-level vehicle customer.
That said, the sales of the Alto have started to show a little bit of strain recently. This is primarily because of the Renault KWID. The latter offers a much more stylish persona. Not only this, but it also comes with a number of features which the Alto misses out on. Consequently, Maruti is feeling the need to upgrade the ageing Alto and replace it with a much more potent vehicle.

New Maruti Alto India Launch
Earlier, we were expecting Maruti to showcase the new Alto in India during the 2018 Auto Expo. And subsequently, launch the hatchback in India sometime during the latter half of this year. However, that did not turn out to be the case. This year’s event’s star was the new Swift. Nevertheless, according to recent developments, we believe that the new Alto could debut in India sometime during the end of 2018 or in 2019.
New Maruti Alto Price In India
The Maruti Alto is known for its value for money proposition. The automaker will continue to maintain that by keeping the price largely similar to the current generation model. At the moment, the base variant of this hatchback retails at INR 2.51 lakh. The top of the line version costs INR 3.78 lakh.

New Maruti Alto: A Quick Overview
As mentioned before, the new Alto will feature a completely new design. Expect the aesthetics to be on the premium side. That said, the car will continue to have compact dimensions. Furthermore, It could feature a slightly cross-ish profile. The cabin of the next-gen Alto will get a completely new layout. It will continue to feature a highly practical ergonomics. In addition to this, expect the top-end variant to come with new features.

We do not expect Maruti to change the new Alto’s engine line-up. It will continue to come with the present 800cc and the 1.0-litre engine options. With a lighter chassis, expect the next-gen versions fuel efficiency to improve considerably. Not only this, Maruti might just play a masterstroke and introduce the AMT gearbox even with the 800cc unit. A 5-speed manual transmission will continue to be available as standard. Furthermore, going by recent media reports, the automaker could also introduce a new 600cc engine in the Alto. This could take up the hatchback’s fuel efficiency up to 30 km/l.

Finally, with the new safety regulation coming into effect starting 2019, the next-gen Alto will get considerable safety upgrades. All the variants will have dual airbags along with ABS with EBD as standard.
