The all-new Kawasaki Ninja 400 was launched recently to fit in between the Ninja 300 and the Ninja 650. Priced at INR 4.69 lakh ex-showroom Delhi, does the 400cc sports bike makes any sense over its elder sibling? Let’s take a look.
Kawasaki India was advancing well in the nation when Bajaj ended the partnership leaving the former with the selective point of sales and service network. As the Japanese giant is re-paving its path in India, it is not holding back on launching new products. The only problem being the price these new bikes are launched at. The existing portfolio of Kawasaki featured great value for money against its competition. The Kawasaki Versys X-300 has launched at INR 4.6 lakh followed by the Kawasaki Ninja 400 at INR 4.69 lakh. With the Kawasaki Z650 already available at INR 4.99 lakh, the difference in terms of value varies drastically. Does the new Kawasaki Ninja 400 still make a worthy purchase, let’s take a look.
Kawasaki Ninja 400 vs Z650 – Price
The recently launched Kawasaki Ninja 400 fetches a price of INR 4.69 lakh ex-showroom. The existing Z650 retails for INR 4.99 lakh ex-showroom. The entire difference is INR 30,000. In terms of EMI, the difference is a mental INR 645 only! This clearly was a single-sided battle with the Z650 proving more value for money than the Ninja.

Kawasaki Ninja 400 vs Z650 – Engine
The Kawasaki Ninja 400 and the Z650 both have 4-valve twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. Thankfully, the similarities end here. The Ninja’s 399cc engine makes 49 PS of max power and 38 Nm of max torque. Comparing it to the Z650, the former makes 68 PS of power and 65.7 Nm of torque. While the gap of 19 PS isn’t much, the 28 Nm difference in torque amounts to 30% increase. Comparing the power to weight ratio, the 400 gets 283.23PS/tonne while the Z650 wins again offering 357.89PS/tonne. The difference in price is minimal, while the Z650 offers 30% more torque. The winner is evident here.
Kawasaki Ninja 400 vs Z650 – Dynamics
The Kawasaki Ninja 400 is a sports bike in a compact package. With its sporty character comes a more committed riding stance, stiffer ride and high revving engine. The Z650, on the other hand, offers a more versatile package. The upright sitting position, softer suspension setup and well-mannered character of the bike make it sweeter and easier to maintain.

Kawasaki Ninja 400 vs Z650 – Verdict
If you want a proper track weapon, save some money and go for the RC390. If you want to go for a Kawasaki, the difference of INR 30,000 will give you much more power, torque and versatility. The only things going in favour of the Kawasaki Ninja 400 are cheaper spare parts and better mileage. If you still want to buy the Ninja, it’s always a good choice.
