The updated Hyundai i20 gets a new look and extra safety tech, but diesel has been axed from the engine line-up

Hyundai i20 facelift - front

This is the new Hyundai i20, an updated version of the second-generation supermini that has been on sale since 2014. It goes on sale in June and will start from around £12,000, a small premium over the existing model.

It’s far from a radical overhaul but Hyundai has freshened up the styling by adding a new front grille, two-tone roof finish and redesigned rear light clusters. On the five-door model new 15- and 16-inch alloy wheels have also been introduced.

More tech has been added inside, too. A new seven-inch colour display on the dash is standard on S and SE models and is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher spec Premium Nav and Premium SE Nav models get a more advance seven-inch infotainment system featuring integrated navigation.

In a move that has been replicated by other manufactures, Hyundai has removed the option of the 1.4-litre diesel engine from the i20 line-up. That means engine options now include the 99bhp or 118bhp version of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo, with the lower powered engine now available with a seven-speed dual clutch auto for the first time.

A 74bhp or 84bhp version of the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine also remains, and both are paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.

In addition, a raft new safety kit also been introduced; as part of Hyundai’s SmartSense pack, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, auto emergency braking and high beam assist is all included. All safety features come as standard on SE spec models and above.
