In our latest Used Car Video review (below) we’ve concentrated on the five-door Sportback, which is the most practical of the A3 offerings available. That’s because it features a longer wheelbase than the three-door, improving space in the rear, and the boot is bigger too.
The result is a terrific all-rounder, helped by its precise, confidence inspiring handling, high levels of comfort (although you might want to avoid the firm S-Line suspension) and strong engine line-up. The petrols are particularly impressive, even if you opt for the entry-level 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo unit, which punches well above its weight. On the diesel front meanwhile buyers can choose between a frugal 1.6 or a more powerful 2.0-litre.
Common to all A3s is a dashboard layout that is all at once beautifully styled, packed with technology and simple to operate. The slim infotainment screen that glides out of the top of the dash when you switch the ignition on is a nice touch, even if it does fall under the category of ‘one more thing to go wrong’ (aside from the odd creak and squeak it’s actually proving to be reliable so far).
As further evidence of just how wide the A3 range is there’s also a plug-in hybrid E-tron that marries a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver potentially outstanding economy (if you plug it in regularly). For anybody wanting to take a first step into the world of electric motoring it’s a tempting option.
