The 2018 Jeep Renegade is likely to make its Indian debut by the end of this year. It is expected to retail in-between the price range of INR 9 lakh to INR 14 Lakh. Consequently, making it a direct rival for the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster.
Jeep India is under consideration of launching yet another made in India product in our country. This all-new product is going to be the 2018 iteration of the Renegade compact SUV. Local manufacturing will help Jeep in keeping the price tag on this SUV in-between the range of INR 9 lakh to INR 14 Lakh. Hence, making it fall in the highly lucrative compact SUV segment in our country. And consequently competing against the likes of Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster. Unlike the other two, the Renegade is likely to feature a proper off-roading kit in select variants. This, along with a highly competitive price tag, might just turn out to be the perfect recipe for success for Jeep India. Going by recent speculations, the Jeep Renegade is likely to make its debut in India sometime during the end of this year. Probably around the festive season this year.

The upcoming cheaper-than-Compass SUV from Jeep will go on to rival everything from a Renault Duster and entry-level Hyundai Creta models to the Mahindra Scorpio. As you can see in the spy images that follow, testing of this SUV is already underway in India. While the exterior of the new model looks sufficiently rugged and has the distinct Jeep identity, the interior looks world-class and borrows many design cues from other models in the family. The interior of the India-spec model will get a 6.5-inch UConnect touchscreen infotainment system that offers smartphone connectivity, park assist, and satellite navigation among other features. Even the Renegade for India will have top-notch plastic quality and the option pack on the top-end trim will include bits like leather upholstery.
Other features that the India-spec model will offer include a 3.5-inch TFT instrument panel, leather steering wheel, automatic climate control, cruise control, and rear parking sensors. The Renegade is a strict 5-seater and there is no 7-seater version on sale anywhere. The upcoming cheapest Jeep SUV in INdia shares the FCA Small Wide 4X4 platform with the new Compass. Many design bits will come from other models in the Jeep line-up.
The recent update for the Renegade on sale abroad brings in a handful of new interior features such as the Uconnect 4 system with a 7.0-inch touchscreen interface. The new infotainment system offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. While the entry-level variants offer a smaller 5.0-inch touchscreen, the flagship trim goes on to offer an 8.4-inch unit. All the models come with voice commands, Bluetooth, and telephony options. The cabin gets a new seat fabric, updated Select-Terrain shifter, and new locations for the USB ports.

Internationally, the Jeep Renegade is on sale with petrol and Diesel engines. In India, the upcoming cheapest Jeep SUV will share its engines with the Compass. This will include the 2.0-litre Multijet turbo Diesel and the 1.4-litre T-Jet turbo petrol unit. India might even get the 1.6-litre Multijet unit that powers the S-Cross. This engine outputs a max. power of 118 BHP and a peak torque of 320 Nm. The top-end model of the Renegade will even offer a 4WD (four-wheel-drive) Active Drive system.

The Jeep Renegade range in international market starts at around $18,000, which translates to about INR 12 lakhs. With Jeep’s production facility in India up and running, the entire production of the Renegade will happen in India. It could have a starting price of around Rs. 9 lakh for the base petrol variant.

It has been spotted testing on Indian roads on multiple occasions. Initial reports suggested Jeep was merely using it to test the platform or engines for future products. However, according to some recent reports, Jeep is evaluating the Renegade for India and will launch it here by in around 18 months from now.

For India, Jeep could use the 1.6-litre MultiJet diesel to power the Renegade. This is the same engine that is found under the hood of the Maruti S-Cross. The 1.6 L Diesel is offered with the Jeep Renegade in the British market. A detuned version of the 1.4 L petrol that will power the Compass could also be on the cards. The Renegade has the Fiat 500L platform as its underpinnings. It gets disc brakes on all the wheels. However, much like the Jeep Compass, the 9-speed automatic transmission could be given a miss.

Jeep Renegade Exterior Design
The Renegade borrows plenty of design features from its siblings. It gets Jeep’s signature seven-slot front grille along with the squarish box-design. You also get circular headlights, boxed out wheel arches, squarish tail-lamps and prominent body cladding all around. There are modern design touches too, including the roof-rails, the glass-area on the sides and the rear.
The Jeep Renegade is not a full-fledged SUV, so do not expect it to go rock crawling or mud bogging or dune-bashing. It will get an AWD drive system which can detect road surfaces and adjust torque sent to all wheels for best grip in different situations, but the vehicle ride height restricts the Renegade to mild off-roading at best.

Jeep Renegade Interior Design
On the inside, you get a Uconnect infotainment system inside the car which gets a 5-inch or a 6.5-inch touchscreen display depending upon the region. The driver gets a 7-inch display unit which can be configured and the same will double up as an instrument cluster as well. You get a panoramic sunroof and the SUV will get a slew of customisation options as well for the accessories. How much of it makes it to the Indian market remains to be seen. We expect the India-spec model to get a more conventional analogue dial set up for the instrument console. Also, the panoramic sunroof might not make it to India. There is no 7 seater version, not even abroad. Much like the Compass, even the Renegade will offer 5 seats only.
