Maruti Suzuki, India largest selling automobile brand is currently working extensively to completely revamp its entire product line-up in our country. The Indo-Japanese automaker has already launched several all-new products along with a couple of generation updates for its existing models recently. The year 2018, the company has already lined-up several other new launches. These include the debut of the next-generation Maruti Ertiga, the mid-life facelift of the Ciaz, the petrol derivative of the Vitara Brezza and the third generation update for the WagonR. The automaker is taking the downward approach in updating its model line-up. Consequently, soon we are going to see the debut of the next-generation, new Maruti Alto 800 in India as well. Expected to launch by the year 2019, the new Alto 800, according to recent speculations, could get a new 600cc petrol engine. This motor will promise a fuel efficiency figure of 30 km/l.

It may be noted here that the Suzuki Alto sold in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) uses a 660cc petrol engine that offers a good mix of mileage and power. This three-cylinder, 658cc, R06A petrol engine outputs a maximum power of 51 PS along with a peak torque of 63 Nm. The engine offers a really high mileage of 37 kmpl in the JC08 test cycle. While it might sound like a downgrade from the current 796cc unit, let’s not forget that the 2018 Alto will be considerably lighter. Also, the 796cc F8 engine has got a bit too long in the tooth now and a modern replacement is definitely the way forward.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is yet to let out an official word on the launch date of the new Maruti Alto 2018. However, there are good chances that the Alto 660cc will go on sale towards the end of next year, probably around the next year’s festive season. In spite of enjoying a 45% market share in India’s passenger car market, MSIL has been gradually losing out to various new entrants such as Datsun and Renault. Both the Redi Go and the Kwid offer 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre variants that directly target the Alto twins. While Maruti has so far launched pricier cars in the form of the new S-Cross and the Ignis, it will finally shift its focus on the entry-level segments to further consolidate its position. Suzuki has been using this small-capacity three-cylinder engine for a lot of time now. We have seen this engine in JDM-spec Alto and even the sporty Cappuccino, with the latter getting a high strung version with over 64 PS of maximum power. A displacement of 658cc, which is just under the 660cc limit, has given these JDM cars the Kei-car advantage. The India-spec Alto 2018 will probably get the 51 PS version. Also, expect the car to offer foldable rear seats to maximize the luggage-carrying capability.Thanks to the new norms, all the variants will have a standard driver’s side airbag. ABS will be available as an option. Safely expect the new Maruti Alto 2018 660cc model to offer features like all four power windows, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, Bluetooth, and AUX connectivity, remote locking, rear parking sensors, etc.
