Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims BMW M3-beating speed and handling for sportiest variant of the Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 performance has officially been confirmed. In a series of tweets, CEO Elon Musk elaborated on the new fastest version of his firm’s compact exec, and it’s got the BMW M3 set firmly in its sights.

Musk says that the performance model will be “15% quicker & with better handling” than BMW’s super saloon, claiming a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds and a 155mph top speed. But perhaps the boldest claim of all is that the new Model 3 will “beat anything in its class on the track”.

The official power output to achieve those figures hasn’t yet been released, but the Model 3 will use a dual motor setup - one powering each axle. Likewise, battery output is still to be confirmed, but the performance model will have a claimed range of 310 miles.

Minor cosmeticic details were also confirmed via Musk's Twitter feed, including the inclusion of a carbon fibre rear spoiler and 20-inch alloy wheels. The interior will feature a black and white colour scheme.

The performance variant’s prices - excluding the semi-autonomous ‘Autopilot’ system - will start from around $78,000. That’s £58,000, though the pricing of other UK Teslas match more closely to their American counterparts on numbers rather than currency, so expect to pay closer to £80,000. Despite Musk’s claims that those figures are ‘about the same’ as the M3, that figure would be roughly £20,000 more than the BMW.
