SUVs are all the craze in India today. People in India traditionally prefer SUVs due to their high ground clearance. After all, the bad road conditions in our country are enough to turn anyone into an SUV lover. In this article, we have compiled a list of the Best Automatic SUV available under Rs 35 Lakhs.
The SUVs today are quite comfortable and have good road manners too. With that said, the only question that everybody has on their mind at all times is which is the SUV to buy. So, today, we bring you a list of best automatic SUVs in India. Why automatic? Because automatic transmissions today contribute to higher mileage and make living with an SUV easy on a daily basis. Also, we have considered the offerings up to a price range starting from less than Rs 30 lakh. So, here’s the best automatic SUV in India on sale today.
Best Automatic SUV in India – Ford Endeavour
Price | Rs 25.65 lakh – 29.59 lakh |
Engine | 2.2-litre TDCi turbo diesel/3.2-litre TDCi turbo diesel |
Power | 158BHP/197BHP |
Torque | 385Nm/470Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed Automatic |
Unique features | Semi-Auto Parallel Park Assist, heated ORVMs, Terrain Management System, Sync 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, projector headlamps |
There are a number of reasons why Ford Endeavour scores top marks here. First off, it is the only SUV here with any sort of autonomous driving capability (technically, semi-autonomous). Being Ford India’s flagship product, it was recently updated with SYNC 3 infotainment unit which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Features such as heated ORVMs and Terrain Management System make it a capable daily driver. With two engines choices on offer and both mated to automatic transmissions, this car earns top marks in almost every area, be it desirability, capability or value-for-money. Hence, it is the best automatic SUV in India under Rs 30 lakh on sale today.

Best Automatic SUV in India (First runner-up) – Volkswagen Tiguan
Price | Rs 27.49 lakh – 30.87 lakh |
Engine | 2.0-litre TDI turbo diesel |
Power | 143BHP |
Torque | 340Nm |
Transmission | 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic |
Unique features | Tri-zone auto A/c, drive mode selector, all-wheel drive, active hood, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlamps |
Volkswagen Tiguan is perhaps the newest SUV on this list but still scores high marks. Why? While it may offer just one engine and gearbox choice, the car more than makes up for all its shortcomings by offering a host of features. Also, the car is pretty good to drive around, as we observed in our review of the car. With all-wheel drive, this car can also handle a variety of road conditions. It may just be a five-seater, but it is good at seating five passengers in comfort. Hence, it secures the second spot on this list.

Best Automatic SUV in India (Second runner-up) – Toyota Fortuner
Price | Rs 26.69 lakh – 32.48 lakh |
Engine | 2.7-litre petrol/2.8-litre turbo diesel |
Power | 166BHP/177BHP |
Torque | 245Nm/450Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed automatic |
Unique features | Paddle shifters, projector headlamps, Driving modes, wood inserts on steering wheel and gear shift console, traction control |
The Fortuner is one of Toyota India’s most-sold nameplates. The reason behind it can be attributed to Toyota’s reliability and the SUV’s reputation as a true-blue off-roader. It comes in at third spot as it offers automatic gearbox with both petrol and diesel engines. Its list of features is also quite good. However, what keeps it from scoring top marks is its ride on the pavement, something we observed in our review of the car. However, since this is a ladder-frame SUV, its off-road capability can more than make up for its deficiencies in on-road manners for its fans. For most folks though, who will use it on the pavement, they may not like its ride.

4. Isuzu MU-X
Price | Rs 24.79 lakh – 26.75 lakh |
Engine | 3.0-litre Ddi turbo diesel |
Power | 174BHP |
Torque | 380Nm |
Transmission | 5-speed automatic |
Unique features | Shift-on-the-fly 4WD, touchscreen infotainment system, projector headlamps |
Isuzu scores high marks on this list because of a few reasons. First off, its engine’s reliability is comparable to Toyota’s. Second, its shift-on-fly 4WD selector is quite handy. Being based on the same platform as the D-Max V-Cross, it also gets the same front suspension setup as the pick-up truck i.e. double wishbone. The rear is different to help it deliver a comfier ride than the pick-up truck. This SUV has a muscular look, lending it great on-road presence. However, Isuzu’s presence in India is still minuscule. Hence, after-sales support may not be as readily available as for other cars on this list. Otherwise, it could have scored higher on this list.
5. Renault Duster AMT
Price | Rs 12.37 lakh |
Engine | 1.5-litre dCi turbo diesel |
Power | 108BHP |
Torque | 248Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed AMT |
Unique features | Auto A/C, tilt-adjustable power steering, cruise control, electrically folding ORVMs, Eco mode |
The Duster is one of Renault‘s most popular products in India. Available in various trims, including petrol automatic and AWD, this SUV is quite capable off and on-road. While the petrol car is equipped with a CVT gearbox, it is the AMT-equipped diesel that makes it to the list. Why? Firstly, in diesel guise, its fuel efficiency is quite good. Secondly, it is quite feature-rich. Renault gave this car a new face quite recently, helping keep this car relevant even when the competition is heating up.

6. Nissan Terrano AMT
Price | Rs 14.48 lakh |
Engine | 1.5-litre dCi turbo diesel |
Power | 109BHP |
Torque | 245Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed AMT |
Unique features | Auto A/C, tilt-adjustable steering, cruise control, electrically-folding ORVMs, Eco mode |
Nissan Terrano AMT has the same specs and features as the Renault Duster AMT. Both cars could have tied for the fifth spot. However, the Terrano’s road presence is not up to the same level as Duster’s. Also, its price is on the higher side, further bringing its score down. That is not to say it is not capable. The Terrano is quite capable an SUV.

Power | 122BHP/126BHP |
Torque | 154Nm/265Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed automatic |
Unique features | Rear camera with steering-adaptive guidelines, 17-inch wheels, cornering headlamps, AppleCarPlay and Android Auto |
Hyundai Creta has to be on this list of Best Automatic SUV in India. The Creta has worked wonders for Hyundai India. It continues to be a good seller for the company. The best part about the car is that it can be had with automatic transmission with both diesel and petrol engines. The fuel efficiency of both engines is quite good. Moreover, the Creta long list of features makes it quite an offering. While it falls behind more capable SUVs, it still scores quite high, owing to some useful features such as cornering headlamps, rear camera with steering-adaptive guidelines and Apple CarPlay with Android Auto. These features are not on offer on cars that cost more than Creta.

Engine | 2.0-litre petrol/2.0 Litre Turbocharged diesel |
Power | 153BHP/182BHP |
Torque | 192Nm/400Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed automatic |
Unique features | LED cornering headlamps, 18-inch wheels, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto |
The Tucson has taken a bite of the lower-D sedan segment pie, even though it competes in the SUV space. First off, we Indians are crazy for SUVs. Second, nothing new was happening in the lower D sedan segment, when Tucson came to India. Hence, it was bought by quite a few of these buyers. However, this SUV is pretty good when it comes to road manners, feature list and road presence. It looks nice, drives nice and its feature list make you feel good about owning this car. However, it scores low on this list as it is more of a soft-roader than a true-blue SUV.

Recently, the 2018 Facelift version of the Mahindra XUV 500 was launched. It comes with top of the end features like Electronic Sunroof, Projector Headlamps, Ecosense, Android Auto, Keyless Entry, Reverse Parking Assist with Camera and much more. However, its micro-hybrid system is not as good at saving fuel as you may think. In terms of safety, it gets 6 airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD and Hill Control. Unlike the earlier models, it does not compromise anywhere on its features, interiors and comfort. Anyhow, the XUV 500 is a beast with a powerful engine and plus it is a seven-seater SUV.

10. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
Price | Rs 27.42 Lakh |
Engine | 2.5-litre DI turbo diesel |
Power | 176BHP |
Torque | 350Nm |
Transmission | 5-speed automatic |
Unique features | Paddle shifters, dual front airbags, projector headlamps, ABS with EBD, 6 Airbags, |
Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is among the few ladder-frame SUVs on this list. However, there are few reasons why it has been positioned so low on this list. First off, it is quite old. Secondly, Mitsubishi has not updated it with new features, something that hurts its score even further. Lastly, it lacks what the Pajero had in spades – road presence. If you look at the Pajero and Pajero Sport side-by-side, you will likely gravitate towards the Pajero for its road presence. The Pajero Sport is just not as special as its price tag suggests. Hence,it’s positioning on the list.

Transmission | 6-speed dual-clutch automatic |
Unique features | Dual-clutch transmission, under co-driver seat storage, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, Hill Control, Traction Control, Keyless Entry, Reverse parking assist with Camera, New Infotainment system. |
Recently, the 2018 Ford Ecosport was launched in which the 1.0 Litre EcoBoost engine was removed. However, Ford’s EcoSport SUV finds a spot on this list due to having a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It is only the second car on this list to come with such a gearbox. However, what hurts its score a lot is that there is no diesel engine – automatic gearbox offering on the car. We Indian talk about SUVs and diesel engines in the same breath. So, not having a diesel engine with an auto gearbox hurts this car’s score on this list. However, unique features such as under co-driver seat storage and 6 airbags (only SUV in its segment to offer these features) keep it from securing the last spot on this list. in the recent version, it gets a new infotainment system, new dashboard and some cosmetic changes.

Unique features | Petrol engine only, paddle shifters, 6 airbags, foot parking brake, Hill Control, keyless entry, Automatic Climate Control, Reverse Parking assist with cameras |
Honda CRV just manages to make it to this list of Best Automatic SUV in India. It secures the last spot as it still does not offer a diesel engine, despite being on sale in India for a long time. Honda has not updated the car in a long time. Hence, its feature list also reflects its age. After all, in today’s time of electric parking brake, which car can you recall offers a foot-operated parking brake? Yes, the CR-V has a foot-operated parking brake. On top of all this, its price should have come down over time. But no! Due to all these reasons, it secures the last spot on this list.
