The compact hatchback segment in India is soon going to witness quite a lot of activity. Maruti Suzuki is finally going to launch the next-generation iteration of the Wagon R in India. The Indo-Japanese automaker is currently testing this vehicle on Indian roads. Speculating a launch which is likely to happen sometime around the festive season this year. By the looks of it, the 2018 WagonR is going to have an all-new exterior and interior design. The engine specifications of this vehicle could remain the same as before. It will continue to come with the same transmission options. We believe that Maruti could employ Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform with the new WagonR. The new-generation Wagon R is already on sale in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). The latest version of this tallboy boasts a modern design, a long list of features, and better safety equipment. The India-bound new-gen model won’t look exactly like the JDM-spec car, but will definitely share the platform. It will also get most of the features that are available abroad. This hatchback has been a highly successful brand for Maruti Suzuki. In it’s second-generation here, the car continues to impress many with its practicality and frugality. However, it has started to age really fast and an all-new model can definitely help the company find more buyers.
Just like the new Dzire, even the Wagon R 2018 will be underpinned by a new platform. The new architecture will be based on the company’s TECT (Total Effective Control Technology). It will make the next-gen model considerably lighter, and safer. It will also improve the handling. The new car will offer a longer list of features, which is likely to include the Smartplay infotainment unit seen on costlier cars from this brand. In Japan, it comes with a 51 BHP, 660cc petrol engine along with a 3.1 BHP hybrid motor. The Stingray on sale in Japan comes with a 65 bhp powerplant. All the variants get a CVT as standard along with options of 2WD and 4WD. The WagonR has been a huge success in its home market. Thanks to its high practicality, high mileage, and easy maintenance, the hatchback has found lakhs of takers. Even in India, Maruti has sold over 20 lakh copies of this tallboy. This car has been among the top five bestselling models for more than a decade now. The popular hatchback has already seen two generations and a handful of facelifts during its tenure in India. The 2018 Maruti Wagon R India debut is now likely to take place at Auto Expo 2018.

The company is yet to let out an official word regarding the launch date of the next-gen WagonR. Subsequently, it will launch in the market around festive season this year. Currently, this tallboy retails for Rs 4.1 lakh to Rs 5.31 lakh. The next generation, which will have more features, a more modern platform, and a new design, will command a price premium over the current version. Also, the fact that the new car will safety features across all the trims should lead to a substantial increase in price. We expect the prices to start at Rs 4.50 lakh. The fully-loaded version should cost in the vicinity of Rs 6.00 lakh. The new car will justify the increase in price by offering a much better ownership experience through more features, better driving dynamics, and higher safety. The next version will be sufficient enough to fend off the competition from the likes of Tata Tiago.

In the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), this tallboy has been on sale in three trims- FA, FX hybrid, and FZ hybrid. The entry-level model comes with a 660cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that offers a maximum power of 51 bhp along with a peak torque of 50 Nm. The hybrid motors available on the other two variants add another 3.1bhp and 50 Nm to the kitty. The Stingray version of the latest hatchback is also available in three trims – L, T Hybrid, and X Hybrid. The hybrid variants output a maximum power of 65bhp along with a peak torque of 98 Nm. All the engines come mated to a CVT. The car offers two drivetrain options – 2WD (two-wheel-drive) and 4WD (four-wheel-drive).
In India, the engine and transmission options will be carried over from the current model. This means it will get the same 1.0 K Series engine that has a max power output of 67 BHP and offers a peak torque of 91 Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and an optional AMT automatic.

As we said, it’s not for sure that the new version of this car would look anywhere close to the Japan-spec model. However, the two will definitely share the platform. This means that the India-spec version will be similar in dimensions, if not the same. The JDM-spec version ot this hatchback measures 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width and 1,660 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,460 mm. Currently, the India-spec WagonR is 3,599 mm long, 1,495 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,400 mm.

2018 Maruti Wagon R Exterior
The 2018 WagonR will have an all-new design that will look much more modern and attractive. That said, it will continue to have a tallboy architecture. It’s not for sure if the India-spec model will look much like the version on sale in Japan. However, chances are that the two versions will share many design cues between them. Underpinning the new generation Wagon R will be Suzuki’s new lightweight platform that not only makes the car lighter but also safer.
Safely expect Maruti to use chrome for the grille and some other styling bits of the exterior. The headlamps will be chunkier and will carry projector setups on the top-end model. The bumpers will be also larger and will look sportier. It is not sure if Maruti would re-launch the Stingray brand with the next-gen of its popular tallboy. However, in case that happens, safely expect the sportier version to have an edgier body kit and less chrome.

Even the interior of the new Wagon R will be totally different from the current model. The next generation will offer much more space and even higher practicality. It will be also made up of better quality materials. The highlight of the dashboard will be a touchscreen infotainment unit that will further elevate the premium feel of the cabin. Also, the buttons and the knobs will have a much better feel to them. Other than this, the cabin will not only offer more space but will also be more flexible to carry additional luggage. Unlike the current version, which has a black-beige cabin, the next generation car will have an all-black treatment. The Stingray version, if it makes to India, will have red accents to add a touch of sportiness.
