Currently, the Maruti Wagon R is in its 3rd generation, since it first came in 1999. A true family car, it is expected to get a new generation update by this festive season. Recently, Wagon R’s test mules were spotted very often. The latest update might give major upgrades to the current one. Upgrades are expected in the exterior, interiors as well as in its feature list. It is speculated that the hatchback will have some premium features in its top-spec trim along with the standard safety equipment. 1) Interiors
The cabin of the Maruti Wagon R will get a refreshed look. The cabin is the place where the hatchback receives most updates. It is speculated to have a bigger cabin space with an all-black interior colour scheme. It currently uses a 2 DIN music system, which will be upgraded to a touchscreen infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other upgrades will include steering mounted controls, premium knobs and buttons, Automatic Climate Control and Keyless entry. Moreover, it will give a more premium look over the earlier version’s cabin design.

2) Exteriors
The Japanese version of the hatchback receives a major exterior haul, with new looks, front grille, bumpers and projector headlamps. However, the Indian version will be a little different from the JDM one and will get some design upgrades like a new front grille, a sportier bumper, projector headlamps and new alloy wheels. In the rear, it might receive an updated boot lid with a rear spoiler and rear mirror wiper. It might get LED tail lights too. Also, it will feature Maruti’s new light weight and stronger platform, which the new Dzire and Swift are using.

3) Engine
The new generation Maruti Wagon R might continue with the same 1.0 Litre K Series engine. The Japanese version comes with a 660cc engine, which would not come in the Indian version. The 1.0 Litre K series engine produces 67 BHP worth of horsepower and 91 Nm worth of torque. It will be mated to a 5-speed Manual Transmission or an Auto Gear Shift on the mid-variant and top- variant models. The car will come in petrol and CNG variants. The second generation of this hatchback had an LPG option, which was later discarded due to limited number of LPG filling stations.
4) Features
The current outgoing Maruti Wagon R gets some basic features. As it did not receive a recent facelift, most of the features are outdated. Well, that’s Maruti. The next generation is expected to get an updated features list. The new list might include Projector Headlamps, Alloy Wheels, Keyless Entry, Tilt-Telescopic Adjustable Steering Wheel, Multi-Functional Steering Wheel, Touchscreen Infotainment System, Automatic Climate Control and Parking Sensors With Camera. However, all of these features would be available only in the top-spec trim. The mid-variant will get almost half of the features. The safety features will include Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX Child Seat Mounts as standard across all the variants.

5) Price and Launch Date
New-generation Maruti Wagon R is expected to launch by October 2018, during the festive season. In this period, a lot of cars and bikes are expected to launch. It is the second entry-level hatchback of Maruti, after Alto. Since it will get major cosmetic updates and a new features list, it will demand some premium charges over the current model. Expect the new generation Maruti Wagon R to be priced starting from Rs 4.5 Lakhs to Rs 5.5 Lakhs. The current one retails from Rs 4.18 Lakhs to Rs 5.39 Lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).
