It might look like a thoroughbred SUV, but the first generation BMW X1 can actually trace its root to back to a 3 Series Touring. What that means in terms of interior space, running costs and common problems is the subject of the latest CarGurus Used Car Video review.

In order to take a closer look at the X1 we borrowed a car from used car supermarket Fords of Winsford, specifically a post-2012 facelift 18d xDrive automatic. In the video we inspect how much space there is for up to five passengers and their luggage, as well as exploring how the backrests of the rear seats can be configured to maximise luggage space.

We also talk about what the X1 is like to drive, and how the combination of a strong 2.0-litre diesel engine and confidence-inspiring handling should ensure you don’t have any complaints. That said, it is still important to think about comfort, because on M Sport suspension and larger wheels the X1’s ride can be too firm for some. The payoff of course is that X1s thus equipped look fantastic, but it could be well worth taking an extended test drive to ensure you’re comfortable with the, erm, comfort.

As with all of our CarGurus Used Car Video Reviews we also consider running costs for the various engines and specifications on offer to help you choose the best model for your needs. Then it’s just a case of heading to the CarGurus UK website, where our unique price analysis and dealer ratings will help you to track down a BMW X1 at a fair price from a dealer you can trust. Can’t say fairer than that.

With thanks to Fords of Winsford for providing the BMW X1 in our video. See their full stock on the CarGurus UK website.
