The Hyundai Carlino sub-4-meter SUV and the Maruti Vitara Brezza rival is likely to launch in India by mid-2019. It will sport a starting price tag of INR 6.5 lakh.
Hyundai Motors India is currently working on an all-new utility vehicle for the Indian market. This vehicle will be based on the Carlino concept which the automaker showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. According to recent media reports, we believe that this new sub-4-meter compact SUV will launch in India sometime around the mid-2019. It is estimated that this compact utility vehicle will sport a price tag of INR 6.5 lakh to INR 9 lakh. Consequently, it will emerge as a direct competitor to the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
The Carlino, codename HND14, will sit below the Creta in the manufacturer’s product portfolio. And it will go on to rival the likes of Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza. This new compact SUV is based on Elite i20 platform. It is likely to share in plenty with the hatchback. It may be noted that the Hyundai Creta is longer than 4 meters. Hence, it is not a direct rival of the EcoSport and Brezza. In terms of pricing as well, it does not beat the EcoSport or the Vitara Brezza. To undercut such cars, Hyundai needs a compact SUV like the HND14 aka Hyundai Carlino. This compact SUV will slot in below the Creta and will help Hyundai expand its presence in the Crossover/SUV segment.

Hyundai Carlino Compact SUV | Mid-2019 |
It was earlier being said that the Hyundai Compact SUV launch will take place only around the end of this decade. However, Hyundai India has said it plans to launch the Carlino by mid-2019. Hyundai was reportedly working on an MPV for India based on the Hexa Space concept. However, the recent slump is MPV sales seems to have prompted a shift in focus towards SUVs/crossovers. MPV plans have been put on hold and instead, Hyundai will be giving priority to the development of the HND-14 compact SUV.
Worth mentioning here is that the Vitara Brezza has managed to establish itself rather well in the fast-growing compact SUV market. With the EcoSport set to get an update soon, the stage looks all set for a fierce battle between the current market leader and the new entrant. With things heating up to such extents, it is for sure that other manufacturers will take notice and try to cash in on the high growth rate in this segment. Hence, it becomes all the more important for the upcoming Hyundai compact SUV to step into the market at the earliest.

Design (Exterior)
Hyundai Carlino or HND14 is a concept vehicle which showcases what Hyundai has in store for us in near future. This car, unlike most Fluidic design cars from the brand, has very aggressive and butch looks. It, however, does follow the design principles that we have seen on other Hyundai cars. The Hyundai Carlino compact SUV comes with a very aggressive front with a large grille, chunky bumpers and scuff plates under the bumper. The headlamps and fog lamps are sleek and are kind of geometric shapes which are more complex than usually seen on Hyundai cars.
The sides are characterized by huge chunky wheel arches, tall boy design, large wheels and muscular body lines. There is also a side body cladding running all across. The rear gets chunky and hexagonal tail lamps with a subtle side sweep, small and high tailgate glass, sporty-dual tone finish bumper and rear scuff plates. The rear of the Carlino looks very similar to the Jeep Renegade small SUV, especially bits like the tail lamps and rear windshield.
Hyundai Compact SUV Interior and Features
Although Hyundai has not shared any official pictures of the interiors, yet they have shared some of the key interior and feature aspects of the Hyundai Carlino compact SUV. It includes fashion inspired interior themes, flexibility and versatility of a compact urban car.
Hyundai has shared in their press release that it will offer interchangeable audio, visual and navigation units. Other convenience and safety include a push start button, electric folding side mirrors, 6 airbags, hill start assist to name a few. Hyundai also shared that Carlino will also feature very low NVH levels, thanks to its 3D Honeycomb blocks design.
Hyundai Carlino vs Maruti Vitara Brezza vs Ford EcoSport
The Carlino project is still in a very nascent stage. Even the interiors haven’t been revealed by Hyundai yet. The compact SUV will be aimed squarely at the new Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. Judging by the concept’styling, the Carlino will boast of a very edgy and butch exterior giving it the required SUV-like stance. This could benefit Hyundai greatly as the Vitara Brezza isn’t exactly the most eye-catching vehicle in the segment. The 1.4-litre petrol and the 1.4-litre diesel engines should give the Carlino enough in terms of performance to take on the Vitara Brezza. However, the EcoSport is likely to remain the most powerful of the lot.
It’ll be interesting to see how many design elements from the concept pictured here make it to the production version, but the large wheels will surely make way for smaller, mileage friendly tires. Hyundai is looking to cash in on the popularity of SUVs in India and while the Creta starts at 9 lacs, presence in the 7-9 lac bracket is what Hyundai will be targeting with Carlino compact SUV. Hyundai is targeting an overall sales figure of 500,000 in one single year. While there is no doubt the manufacturer is more than capable of achieving this, models such as the HND-14 will be very crucial if they are to achieve such figures.
Currently, there is no official word on when this car will become a reality for Indian roads. Going by our experience of Concept cars making to production models, it may take anywhere between 18 months to 24 months for it to be seen at the dealerships. We expect that Hyundai will bring this to India soon to offer more choices to potential customers of compact SUVs.
