Mitsubishi Expander MPV India Launch On The Cards- Complete Details

The Mitsubishi Expander MPV might launch in India by the end of this year. If and when launched, the MPV will compete against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Prices will fall in the range of INR 6.5 lakh to 8.5 lakh.

The MPV segment is soon picking up the pace in the Indian market. Owing to large Indian families, the need to own bigger, practical and feature-rich cars is increasing. With the MPVs now getting better and better these days and offering an almost sedan class like ride, handling and comfort, buyers are rooting to buy these cars. Hence, in the near future, we are going to see the launch of several new MPVs in India.  One of these is likely to be Mitsubishi which might launch the Expander MPV in India by the year-end. Its prices will fall in the range of INR 6.5 lakh to 8.5 lakh and as a result, is going to compete with the likes of Maruti Ertiga and Renault Lodgy.

Like we just said, the launch date for the Expander in Indonesia was August 10, 2017. Subsequently, the new car is expected to even launch in Philippines and Thailand. Mitsubishi is yet to let out an official word on the Expander’s India launch prospects. That said, we do feel like this new model would find many takers in India. For now, production of the new model will take place at the company’s new manufacturing plant in Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. The design of the new Expander MPV is the result of company’s new Dynamic Shield philosophy.

The new Expander MPV crossover has a somewhat aggressive stance. Thanks to large dimensions and a crossover-ish look, the new Mitsubishi 7-seater MPV exudes dynamism and a rather athletic appeal. The new model measures 4,475 mm in length, 1,750 mm in width and 1,700 mm in height. The new MPV crossover enjoys a really high ground clearance of 205 mm (perfect for Indian roads, we say!). It’s being said that the new Mitsubishi Expander 2018 offers enough interior space to seat 7 in reasonable comfort.

The company goes on to state that its latest MPV offers an amalgam of the ruggedness of an SUV and the practicality of an MPV. In words of the company, the Expander combines “toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV”.While the exterior looks sufficiently SUV-ish, the interior offers three row of seats along with a dual-tone beige-grey colour theme for the cabin. For now, the new model will go on sale with only one engine option – 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine. The engine benefits from MIVEC, which is nothing but variable valve timing technology in Mitsubishi’s speak. Transmission options for this MPV crossover include a Five-speed manual and a Four-speed automatic transmission.

2018 Mitsubishi Expander MPV Launch Date

Indonesia Launch August 10, 2017
India Launch (expected) Late-2018

The new 2018 Expander MPV will launch in Indonesia at this year’s Jakarta Motor Show on August 10, 2017. In Indonesia, the new model will become a direct rival to the 7-seater Honda BRV. Subsequently, the new model will even go on sale in Philippines and Thailand. Details on the India launch date aren’t available at the moment. However, we’re expecting to see the new model at the Auto Expo 2018 to gauge public interest in this new product. In India, Mitsubishi sells the Pajero Sport and the Montero SUV at the moment. It will also launch the new generation Outlander in coming months. Launching the Expander here should help Mitsubishi grow in the more mainstream market.2018 mitsubishi expander rear angle image

2018 Mitsubishi Expander Price

Minimum Price Rs 8 Lakh
Maximum Price Rs 10 Lakh

Like we said, India launch is unconfirmed at the moment. However, the Expander MPV could command a starting price of Rs 8 lakh if it ever launches in India. The top-end model could cost Rs 10 lakh. Launching the Expander in India can help Mitsubishi establish a stronger foothold in the market. Mitsubishi has sold the Lancer and Cedia sedans in the past, which did help the manufacturer have a presence in the lower segments. With its current product portfolio comprising of the Pajero Sport and Montero, there’s absolutely no focus on sub-25 lakhs segments. All this could change with the launch of the Expander here.
