1. Datsun redi-GO – 25.17 kpl
Tied for first place with the Renault Kwid on our list of the most fuel efficient petrol cars in India is the Datsun redi-GO. The Kwid and redi-GO utilise the same CMF-A platform and also share the same engine. This 799 cc three-cylinder engine puts out 54 PS of max. power and 72 Nm of peak torque and returns a healthy claimed fuel mileage of 25.17 kpl, same as the Kwid. Datsun launched the redi-GO in June 2016 at a mouth-watering starting price of just INR 2.39 lacs (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

3. Maruti Alto 800 – 24.7 kpl
The best selling car in India is also one of the most fuel efficient petrol cars in India. The most recent updates moved it up the list and it now sits above the Alto K10 and Celerio, second only to the Kwid/redi-GO. As part of the update, the Alto 800 also got a new nose and a slight price cut to counter the Kwid and redi-GO’s threat. Powering the Alto 800 is a 796cc petrol motor which produces 47.3 bhp and 69 Nm torque. Maruti has tried its best to add some flair to the exteriors and while it doesn’t look bad for a car its price, most people will not be buying it for its looks.

4. Maruti Alto K10 – 24.07 kpl
The launch of the Datsun redi-GO and the updated Alto 800 has pushed the Alto K10 down a couple of spots on our list of the most fuel efficient petrol cars in India. Based on the Alto 800, the K10 packs a bigger, 1.0-litre K-Series motor which makes 67 bhp and 90 Nm torque. The Maruti Alto K10 can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT, both of which have the same mileage rating. The exteriors might not be as appealing as the previous iteration, but the interiors are certainly a better place to be in.

Tata’s new hatchback, the Tiago, makes an entry into the list of the top 5 most fuel efficient petrol cars in India in the sixth place. At an ARAI certified 23.84 kpl, the Tiago is more fuel than its closest rival, the Maruti Celerio, despite having a bigger, more powerful engine. The Tiago petrol is priced between Rs. 3.24 lakh and 4.99 lakh and comes packed with features. It is also cheaper than its rivals making it a fantastic value for money proposition.

7. Tata Nano GenX – 23.6 kpl
In seventh place, albeit by a very small margin, is the Tata Nano. It received a major update in 2015 in the form of the Nano GenX. Powered by the smallest internal combustion employed by a passenger car in India, the Nano manages to return an impressive 23.6 kpl under ARAI test conditions. Tata has transformed the Nano into a much better buy in its latest GenX guise. The A-segment hatch now gets an optional AMT automatic, openable hatch and refreshed exteriors. The Dzire has been very successful in India and the new model will only build on that success. Powering the Dzire petrol is a 1.2 L engine that makes 83 BHP and 115 Nm. It can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. Both variants return a claimed mileage of 22 KMPL.
