The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is soon going to receive a big makeover in India. The Indo-Japanese automaker is all set to launch the 2018 generation update for this SUV in our country this festive season. So far there have been numerous sightings of this vehicle’s test mule in India. That said, details regarding the new Wagon R are still under wraps. What we can safely speculate is that with this generation update, this compact hatchback is going to get a complete makeover in terms of its exterior as well as interior design. The company is yet to let out an official word regarding the launch date of the next-gen WagonR. Subsequently, it will launch in the market around festive season this year. The 2018 Wagon R will be a complete model replacement of the current version. It’s too early to comment if Maruti would re-launch the Stingray brand with the introduction of the 2018 version.

Currently, this tallboy retails for Rs 4.1 lakh to Rs 5.31 lakh. The next generation, which will have more features, a more modern platform, and a new design, will command a price premium over the current version. Also, the fact that the new car will safety features across all the trims should lead to a substantial increase in price. We expect the prices to start at Rs 4.50 lakh. The fully-loaded version should cost in the vicinity of Rs 6.00 lakh. The new car will justify the increase in price by offering a much better ownership experience through more features, better driving dynamics, and higher safety. The next version will be sufficient enough to fend off the competition from the likes of Tata Tiago.

In the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), this tallboy has been on sale in three trims- FA, FX hybrid, and FZ hybrid. The entry-level model comes with a 660cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that offers a maximum power of 51 bhp along with a peak torque of 50 Nm. The hybrid motors available on the other two variants add another 3.1bhp and 50 Nm to the kitty. The Stingray version of the latest hatchback is also available in three trims – L, T Hybrid, and X Hybrid. The hybrid variants output a maximum power of 65bhp along with a peak torque of 98 Nm. All the engines come mated to a CVT. The car offers two drivetrain options – 2WD (two-wheel-drive) and 4WD (four-wheel-drive).

In India, the engine and transmission options will be carried over from the current model. This means it will get the same 1.0 K Series engine that has a max power output of 67 BHP and offers a peak torque of 91 Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and an optional AMT automatic.

As the new 2018 Wagon R will use the same engine as other models, the mileage remains unchanged. This car is capable of delivering up to 16 KMPL in the city and around 22 KMPL on the highway.

As we said, it’s not for sure that the new version of this car would look anywhere close to the Japan-spec model. However, the two will definitely share the platform. Maruti Wagon R 2018- Exterior
The 2018 WagonR will have an all-new design that will look much more modern and attractive. That said, it will continue to have a tallboy architecture. It’s not for sure if the India-spec model will look much like the version on sale in Japan. However, chances are that the two versions will share many design cues between them. Underpinning the new generation Wagon R will be Suzuki’s new lightweight platform that not only makes the car lighter but also safer.

Safely expect Maruti to use chrome for the grille and some other styling bits of the exterior. The headlamps will be chunkier and will carry projector setups on the top-end model. The bumpers will be also larger and will look sportier. It is not sure if Maruti would re-launch the Stingray brand with the next-gen of its popular tallboy. However, in case that happens, safely expect the sportier version to have an edgier body kit and less chrome.
The new-generation Wagon R is already on sale in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). The latest version of this tallboy boasts a modern design, a long list of features, and better safety equipment. The India-bound new-gen model won’t look exactly like the JDM-spec car, but will definitely share the platform. It will also get most of the features that are available abroad. This hatchback has been a highly successful brand for Maruti Suzuki. In it’s second-generation here, the car continues to impress many with its practicality and frugality. However, it has started to age really fast and an all-new model can definitely help the company find more buyers.
