New Honda Brio Makes Its Global Debut At GIIAS- A Worthy Competitor For Maruti Swift?

New Honda Brio has been revealed at the GIIAS 2018. It looks similar to the Small RS concept. Globally, Brio will come in the normal as well as an ‘RS’ variant oo. We can expect the hatchback to launch in India by the second half of 2019.

Honda Brio is one of the remaining hatchbacks in its segment to get a facelift. It received the last update in 2016. It falls in the premium-compact hatchback class, which is majorly dominated by Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10. After all the speculations and reports, finally, new Honda Brio makes its global debut at the 2018 GIIAS. It looks similar to the Honda Small RS Concept, which was unveiled earlier this year. On the unveiling, the new Brio RS and the standard Brio, both were showcased. The ‘RS’ version might not come to India, but the other one is expected to launch in India by the second half of 2019. The Indian-spec will copy most of its design elements, mechanics and features from the Amaze. But, the main question is that, will it be able to compete with the Swift and the Grand i10?

The new Honda Brio will get Amaze’s engine. It will come with the 1.2 Litre i-VTEC petrol engine and the 1.5 Litre i-DTEC diesel engine. The petrol unit churns out 87 BHP of power and 109 Nm of torque. The diesel variant produces 98.6 BHP of power and 200 Nm of torque. Like Amaze, this car will also get CVT options in petrol and diesel variants. Also, Swift currently offers one in diesel. The new Brio will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission along with an option CVT. The hatchback might also get the segment first, Paddle Shifters in CVT variant.

For features, it might also look up to the Amaze. Features on the exterior body include LED DRLs, Electrically Adjust ORVMs with turn indicators and Halogen headlamps. In the interior, it will get Automatic Climate Control, Rear AC vents, the new 2.0 Digipad infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and Day and Night IRVMs. It will also get steering mounted voice controls and cruise control. However, cruise control might only come in the diesel variant. For safety features, it will get dual airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX as standard. The higher models will get ESP, tractional control, Reverse parking camera EBD and 6 airbags.

The new Honda Brio looks much larger and sportier than the current Brio. It gets a similar looking grille as the Amaze and thankfully, chops off its odd-looking tailgate glass. Many similarities can be seen with the RS concept, like the body style, a larger front end and a better looking rear end. The new Brio surely looks bigger than the current one. In the interiors, it might get an all-black them with some chrome or silver accents. The Amaze gets a black and beige treatment, though.

Its main rival, Swift also gets nearly the same features. Swift gets Projector headlamps with LED tail lights, C Pillar mounted rear door handle and a fuel-efficient engine. Moreover, everyone knows about Maruti’s stand in the market. The Swift starts from Rs 4.99 Lakhs and goes up to Rs 7.29 Lakhs for the petrol variant. The diesel one starts from Rs 5.99 Lakhs and goes up to Rs 8.29 Lakhs (Ex-showroom Delhi). A big plus point for this car is that it offers AMT in both petrol and diesel variant, but fails to offer AMT options in top-spec trims.

We expect this hatchback to launch in India in the second half of 2019. In early 2019, it might go on sale in the global markets. The expected price of the hatchback is around Rs 5 Lakhs to Rs 8 Lakhs (ex-showroom).
