It doesn’t matter if you’re driving to the airport or embarking on a summer staycation, making the most of your car’s boot space could well be a top priority over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend.
Knowing as much, Spanish car maker Seat has taken smart packing one step further by enlisting the help of Aline Lau, Europe’s first consultant on the KonMari Method. This, for those of a more cluttered disposition, is a technique that encourages tidiness and order by only holding on to those items in your life (or indeed your car) which ‘spark joy’, and was originally introduced in Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.
What Seat has done is apply this mindset to the automotive arena, which given the precarious state of packing evident in some vehicles is probably no bad thing. Some of it seems fairly obvious, such as removing items you can really do without, while other pointers such as packing cases vertically into the boot to maximise space and ease of access, are genuinely helpful. There’s also the old trick of rolling clothing to save space, as well as putting everything into boxes before it goes into the boot.
The theory is that by following these tips you’ll be able to fit all of your essentials into a smaller vehicle than you might expect, which is why Seat chose one of its more compact offerings, the Arona crossover, to demonstrate.
Admittedly, the Arona’s 400-litre load area is still among the best in its class, but even so the fact that Lau managed to cram in two suitcases, a box of beach toys, towels, sports equipment, shoes, a beach bag, a beach mat, a full-size pushchair and a boogie board is pretty impressive.
Of course, packing in this way doesn’t just make life less cluttered, but is also safer, leaving fewer items to move around the car’s interior in the event of an evasive manoeuvre or accident.
So there you have it, a few simple reasons why it’s worth paying attention not only to what you pack, but also how you pack it. If anybody has a top tip for shrinking the inevitably enormous bag of dirty washing at the end of the holiday we’d be keen to hear it too – but only if it doesn’t involve rolling up smelly socks.
