The prices of the SUV start from Rs 39.90 Lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) and is now available in three variants. Read ahead to get the details.
The Volvo XC40 was recently launched in India with its prices starting from Rs 39.90 Lakhs (ex-showroom). Being termed as one of the safest SUVs in the world is not as easy as it sounds. It needs to have a whole lot of safety equipment and features. Well, the Baby Volvo SUV gets it just right. Safety features of the SUV include Pilot Assist with traffic management ability, Oncoming lane mitigation, Blind Spot Detection and lot more. Earlier, only the mid-spec trim, R-Design was launched in India. Recently, the other two variants – Momentum and Inscription – were also launched. It uses a 2.0 Litre Turbo-charged diesel engine that produces around 190 BHP worth of maximum power and 400 Nm worth of torque. The competitors of the SUV include BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3 and the upcoming Jaguar E-Pace.
The Inscription variant gets a different grille compared to the R-Design. In the interiors, the Inscription comes with a Wood decor trim, crystal gear knob and metal tread plates with the Inscription badge. It also gets a leather-clad remote key and a remote tag. The low-spec trim, Momentum, does not get features like the Harman/Kardon audio system, wireless charging, power tailgate, adaptive cruise control, park assist pilot with park assist and heated seats with power foldable rear headrests.

Volvo XC40 – Variants
Earlier, only the R-Design variant was launched in India. Now the base variant and top-end variant – Momentum and Inscription – both have been launched in India. While there are no changes mechanically, the base variant, Momentum gets fewer features. However, there are only cosmetic differences between the mid-spec and the top-spec trims. The Momentum misses out on features such as wireless mobile phone charging, Harman Kardon sound system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a powered tailgate, and heated front and rear seats.

The Indian version of XC 40 gets a 4-cylinder turbo-charged 2.0 L diesel engine. Globally, the SUV also comes in petrol variants. The diesel engine produces 190 BHP worth of power and 400 Nm worth of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed Geartronic Automatic transmission. It gets a Haldex AWD drivetrain. XC40 has different drive modes, however, it misses out on air suspension.
Volvo XC40 – Design
Most of the styling elements of the XC 40 have been copied from the XC90, however, some of the elements like the spoilers and the bumpers are different from its sibling. It sports a tall boy stance with some sporty elements like Thor’s hammer headlamps. It copies the chromed grille, front sporty bumper and the contrasting color roof from XC90. The headlamps, L-shaped tail lights and the 18-inch alloy wheels are standard. It also features LED DRLs in Thor’s hammer. In the rear, it also gets a rear wiper with washer and 2 rectangle-shaped exhausts. It gets a triple-tone color treatment with 2 color schemes. Overall, yes it looks sporty and bigger than some of its competitors. It has a large wheelbase, which makes it look bigger.

Volvo XC40 – Interior
Again, some of the elements from its elder siblings are put in the XC40’s interiors. From the inside, the SUV looks superb and just too elegant. The SUV gets a 9-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment, three-spoke steering wheel with functions mounted and GPS navigation on the digital instrument cluster. It also gets a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon music system and rear parking sensors with a camera. It gets heavy chrome fillings inside the car, like on the gear knobs and the steering wheel. In terms of storage, it offers storage spaces in the center console, under the front seats and in the removable bin and car slots on the dashboard.

In terms of features, Volvo XC40 does not fall behind. It gets very notable features, some of which are found in its elder siblings too. Following are the features of the SUV:

As it is a premium Compact SUV, it competes with BMW X1, the upcoming Jaguar E-Pace, Audi Q3 and Mercedes Benz GLA. Most of these SUVs fall in the range of 31 Lakhs to Rs 45 Lakhs. Currently, in this segment, GLA is the cheapest option and BMW X1 is the most expensive option. The Jaguar E-Pace is also a compact SUV and the entry-level car of the brand. It is also expected to launch in Late 2018.
