From October, all new Indian cars will have pedestrian safety features as standard. At Global NCAP’s event in Delhi, more safety norms have been announced. These measures are taken in order to curb increasing road accidents.
The global NCAP’s Stop The Crash event is currently being held in Delhi. Yesterday, the advantages and disadvantages of safety features like ABS, EBD and more were demonstrated. In the wake of rising road accidents in India, the Transport Ministry has announced that all new Indian cars from October will have pedestrian safety features. In this measure, first of all, the design of the bonnet of the car will be changed. It will be designed in such a way that it will have a lesser impact on pedestrians during an accident.
More than 1.5 Lakh people are killed in road accidents every year in India. These include cases of drunk driving, hit and run and such cases. In order to curb these increasing accidents, the government has implemented certain measures.

Mr. Abhay Damle, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), has commented on this rule. He says that” Advanced Safety features in all vehicles in India as vehicle safety cannot be confined to luxury vehicles only.”
He adds that already ABS is implemented for two-wheelers above 125cc and from next month, every car has to change the design of their bonnet. Also, Automatic Headlamps are already mandated for every two-wheeler.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) will also be standard fitments across all new vehicles by 2023.

When the system detects loss of steering, that is when ESC is used. The system applies brakes automatically and the car then tends to moves wherever the driver wants it to go. It basically improves a car’s stability by detecting and reducing traction loss.
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) uses radars, sensors, and cameras to detect the distance between the car in front of you and behind you. If the system feels that the distance between two cars is decreasing and there is no response from the driver, then it automatically applies the brakes. It is found in high-end luxury cars.

In 2019, ABS with dual front airbags and rear parking sensors will be standard fitment across all models. Also, for every two-wheeler of 125cc or more, it will come with ABS as standard fitments across all models.
