Ford has confirmed that it will present an updated two-tonne Transit van at the Hannover Commercial Vehicles show on 20 September, which will be available with a 48V mild hybrid powertrain. Also set to take its public debut is the smaller Transit Custom PHEV, in its final production form. Both vans are scheduled to launch in 2019.
Ford promises that the updated two-tonne Transit will arrive with more economical 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engines, an increased maximum payload, new connectivity features including on-board 4G, a refreshed interior with new storage spaces and a subtle front-end redesign.

The 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel will be available mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system and manual transmission. Energy is recuperated through braking and stored in the lithium ion battery, which is then used to help drive the engine and power on-board systems, saving fuel. While the production ready plug-in Transit Custom will appear for the first time alongside its larger stablemate.
The Transit Custom PHEV is equipped with a 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol engine, which acts as a range extender. A lithium ion battery pack is located under the cargo bay floor. Ford claims 31 miles of pure electric running, with an overall range of more than 300 miles once the engine is called upon to recharge the batteries.
Cargo volume is unaffected by the hybrid system Ford says that the interior receives the same tweaks as the standard van, but it also gets unique instrumentation.
