Made-in-India Hyundai Elite i20 secures an overall 3-star safety rating in global NCAP tests and a 2-star safety rating for the children. As of now, Polo and Etios Liva are the safest hatchbacks in India.
Made-in-India Hyundai Elite i20 scores a 3-star safety rating in #SaferCarsForAfrica campaign. Global NCAP used the India-spec i20 for the crash tests. The hatchback scored 3-stars for adult safety and 2-stars for child safety. It was equipped with dual front airbags, which comes as standard fitment. Elite i20 scored 10.5 out of 17 points in adult safety and 18.16 out of 49 points in child safety. Amongst the safety tested hatchbacks, i20 now comes on the third position.
The crash test results stated that the head and neck of the driver and the passenger were protected. Driver’s chest was not fully protected, but the passenger’s chest had enough protection. Driver’s knees were also not fully protected, but passenger’s safety of knees was satisfactory. The tests were conducted at a speed of 64 km/hr, rating the bodyshell of Hyundai Elite i20 as unstable.

Meanwhile, the rear-facing child with an adult seatbelt showed good protection to head and chest. On the other hand, the child on then ISOFIX mount had a high risk to his head. This was because, despite having an ISOFIX mount, the child was pushed much forward. ISOFIX feature is not offered as standard fitments and only come in the top-end Asta (O).
Other safety features onboard the Hyundai Elite i20 include 6-airbags, ABS with EBD, Rear Parking sensors with a rearview camera, Auto Headlamps, Height Adjustable Seat Belt and Rear Defogger with a timer. The 6-airbags feature is the first in the segment and comes only in the top-end variant.

Other than i20, a couple of hatchbacks have also taken the crash tests. Volkswagen Polo and Etios Liva with 2 airbags each secured the highest rating in crash tests. While Polo secured 4 stars in adult safety and 3 stars in child safety, Etios Liva got 4 in adult safety and 2 stars in the other.
Recently, there were some additions to the upcoming safety norms. As per the upcoming norms effective from April 2019, dual airbags with ABS and EBD are mandatory in every car. Also, all the cars will have a revised bonnet structure to reduce the impact on pedestrians during an accident.
After 2022-23, all cars will come with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Autonomous Emergency Braking System (AEB) as standard features. ESC is found in premium SUVs and AEB is usually found in high-end cars like Volvo.

Hatchbacks like Renault Kwid, Datsun GO, Maruti Swift and Hyundai Eon have also taken these tests. Kwid, GO and Eon received 0 stars, whereas Swift has received 2 stars for adult and child safety.
