Maruti Suzuki has decided not to upgrade the ageing Gypsy for the upcoming safety and emission regulations. Bookings will stop by the end of this year. Maruti Gypsy to out of production in March 2019.
It looks like that it is the end of the road for the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy. On sale since 1985, the iconic 4×4 from Maruti will face discontinuation in March 2019. Bookings for the Maruti Gypsy will stop in the month of December 2018 itself.
A report published on NDTV states that Maruti Suzuki has decided not to upgrade the Gypsy for the upcoming safety and emission regulations. Hence, if you want a make this iconic Indian vehicle a part of your garage, this is the right time to do so. Currently, a showroom fresh, BS-IV complaint Gypsy will set to you back by 6.21 lakh for the soft top and 6.36 lakh if you go for the hard-top version.

The current iteration of this 4×4 comes with a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 80 BHP of power along with 105 Nm of peak torque. It comes with a permanent four-wheel drive system. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It also offers a low ratio mode.
The Maruti Gypsy has been an integral part of the Indian automotive industry. A major chunk of this 4×4 sales account for vehicles issued to the military forces, government officials and police. However, thanks to its lightweight construction, proven reliability and capable 4×4 system, it has found its way to the home of a number of off-road enthusiasts as well. Gypsy’s have always been an integral part of a number of rally sports in India.

Earlier this year, right after the debut of the 2018 Suzuki Gypsy, there were speculations of the same coming to Indian as a possible replacement for the Gypsy. However, Maruti officials have stated that they do not see a huge demand in the lifestyle segment and hence have for now kept plans for the launch of the Jimny in India on a hold.
However, with the relaxation of taxes on the import of up to 1,000 units of a product, there are chances that Maruti might consider bringing the Jimny to India. And is subsequently is the demand increases, even start locally producing the same.
