A new Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake is set to join the German brand's range, and these spy shots show that development is underway ahead of an official reveal expected in autumn 2019.
As a compact premium estate, the CLA Shooting Brake will have no direct rivals. Audi currently produces a saloon version of the A3 to compete with the regular CLA, and while BMW is preparing a 2 Series Gran Coupe to compete in the same class, there’s no official word on an estate variant.

It’s the second generation of the mini estate, and based on these images of a disguised prototype, it suggests that the Shooting Brake will prioritise a sporty look over outright practicality.
Through the camouflage it’s clear to see a sleek profile, and a roofline which tapers away towards the back end as opposed to giving a large boot opening. Details like the lights are mostly hidden, but we expect a front end which bears a resemblance to the A-Class, and rear lights whose flat shape bear resemblance to the larger CLS.
Under the skin, the CLA Shooting Brake will be mechanically similar to the A-Class hatchback, and as a result will be powered by the same petrol and diesel units. The A-Class range currently features a 1.5-litre turbo diesel with 114bhp, a 1.3-litre turbo petrol with 134bhp or 161bhp, and a 2.0-litre turbo with 221bhp.
Of course, this means that hot AMG versions will also appear at a later date. A CLA 35 is likely to feature, sharing its 302bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged unit with the latest A 35 and delivering a 0-62mph time close to that car’s 4.7-second figure. Above that will sit the CLA 45: it’s likely to make over 400bhp and may feature hybrid assistance.
A late 2019 release places the Shooting Brake’s debut at roughly six months after the standard CLA, which is due in the spring.
