The next-generation Ford EcoSport compact SUV could very well use petrol and diesel engines sourced from Mahindra.
The American automaker’s compact SUV is going to get the same BS-VI complaint powertrains which are set to make their debut on Mahindra’s new SsangYong Tivoli based compact SUV.
This is part of an agreement signed between these two automotive giants under which they are going to share powertrains and work together on the development of new products in India as well as abroad.
“The S201 will have both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine of S201 will also be shared with the Ecosport made by Ford. Both engines will be BS-VI compliant,” said Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra to Moneycontrol.

The Ford EcoSport was recently launched in India with a mid-life update. As part of this upgrade, in addition to aesthetic and feature alterations, this compact SUV also received an all-new 1.5-litre petrol engine.
This new petrol engine was developed by Ford itself, however, it meets the current BS-IV emission regulations and not the upcoming BS-VI norms. In addition to the 1.5-litre petrol, the Ford EcoSport later was also introduced with a smaller capacity 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine.
Furthermore, the SUV also comes with a Ford developed 1.5-litre diesel engine as well.

None of the above-mentioned powertrain options is under consideration for BS-VI upgradation.
Ford India has decided to instead outsource the engine development to Mahindra and hence saving on the development costs involved.
The new engines in questions will first make their debut in India on the all-new Mahindra S201 compact SUV.
As mentioned before, the S201 is based on the global SsangYong Tivoli. And it comes to India wearing a Mahindra badge with Mahindra styling tweaks.

The launch of the next-generation Ford EcoSport is still some time away. And so is the implementation of the new BS-VI emission regulations which come in effect starting April 2020.

There are chances that Mahindra might introduce the S201 SUV with BS-IV engines which are BS-VI compliant and choose to upgrade them to the latter closer to the deadline in 2020.
The next-generation Ford EcoSport, however, will launch in India with BS-VI ready engine only.
In addition to share powertrains, Mahindra and Ford are also working together on the development of two new SUVs.
The first of these is going to launch in 2021. This C-segment SUV is going to use a Mahindra platform. It will target the Scorpio segment. In addition to this, there will be a new B-Segment SUV which is going to rival against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
