New 2019 Lexus LC Convertible previewed with Detroit concept

The Lexus LC Convertible Concept will make its public debut at Detroit before morphing into a full-production version

Lexus has officially indicated that an LC Convertible is on the way, revealing a close-to-production concept version of the model ahead of next week’s Detroit Motor Show.

Lexus describes the upcoming convertible LC as a “halo vehicle for the entire Lexus brand”, and it will eventually be joined by a fully-fledged F badged version of the LC Coupe, with up to 600bhp.

The LC Convertble Concept doesn’t leave much to the imagination – it is a complete preview of the design of the upcoming drop-top LC, with no concept car fripperies in sight.

The elegant Coupe shape morphs into a traditional roadster with a large, flat rear deck. The roof is a retractable hard-top, but Lexus has not yet issued any images of it in place.

Elsewhere, the LC Convertible Concept rides on 22-inch alloy wheels, while the interior is upholstered in white leather with yellow highlights.

The drop-top will address a major omission in the Lexus line-up; there’s no convertible at present and Toyota’s luxury arm has little pedigree in this area with neither of its previous offerings, the IS C and SC, being especially well received.

As for when the producton version of the LC Convertible will land, a Lexus insider told Auto Express last summer that we could expect the model to join the brand’s line-up within 18 months. As such, we expect it in showrooms by the end of 2019.
