MINI’s new John Cooper Works GP III will be launched in 2020, featuring a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with more than 300bhp, the British firm has announced. Like previous GP models, it will be built in a limited production run, with only 3,000 units available for sale worldwide.
It will draw inspiration from the John Cooper Works GP Concept from the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. As such upgrades over the current range-topper, the John Cooper Works, will likely include a reworked suspension setup, bigger brakes, a widened track, a new differential and a redesigned exterior with functional aerodynamics.

The engine will likely be a highly-tuned version of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit from the standard MINI JCW. To achieve MINI’s “more than 300bhp” claim, we expect it will be fitted with a larger turbocharger, a new intercooler system and reworked exhaust.
Recent spy shots of a MINI test mule sporting beefy brakes and the GP concept’s rear wing suggests the production model won’t stray too far away from the show car’s brief.
The showroom version probably won’t go to the same weight-saving extremes as the concept, but it is expected to shed a few kilogrammes over the standard John Cooper Works.
According to MINI, the John Cooper Works GP is now entering its final stages of development, with track-testing due to start in the coming months.
