A consultation has been launched into implementing 20mph speed limits on all roads in central London managed by Transport for London (TfL).
At present, there are nine TfL-managed roads in central London that have 20mph speed limits, but the Government body wants to roughly triple this figure.
• City of London to get 15mph speed limit
The first phase of this will see 20mph limits introduced on 16 entire streets – five of which make up the Aldgate Gyratory – and sections of three others. In addition, TfL says other projects it’s running will reduce the limit from 30mph to 20mph on six other stretches of road.
Pedestrian crossings in the proposed 20mph zones will be raised to the same level as the pavement, creating a de-facto speed bumps. These are designed to be gentle enough to drive over at 20mph, but have the potential to scrape the undersides of vehicles travelling over them at higher speeds.
The white line at the centre of the affected roads will also be removed, with TfL claiming this slows drivers down by making them pay more attention to the road space they are using. TfL has also confirmed that all of its existing speed cameras would be recalibrated to enforce the new 20mph limit.
The scheme is part of TfL’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from London’s transport network by 2041. The body argues that five in 10 adult pedestrians struck by the front of a vehicle at 30mph are killed, compared to just one in 10 at 20mph.
The consultation on the proposed 20mph speed limit scheme opened on 5 June 2019 and will close on 10 July 2019. Those who wish to have their say can email consultations@tfl.gov.uk or call 0343 222 1155.
