The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will come to India in a single iteration – the 840i sDrive Gran Coupe – powered by an inline six-cylinder petrol engine.
BMW India has been consistently upgrading their lineup with new launches and updated versions or new generations of their existing cars. This year itself, we saw the launch of the new X5, the 7 series and the X7 and most recently, the all-new 3 series. Now we have come to know that BMW will be launching the 8 series Gran Coupe in India in the second quarter of 2020, which means it will be here before June of next year.
Internationally, the BMW 8 series comes in several guises with different powertrains. There’s 840i sDrive Gran Coupe which is essentially the entry model into 8 series Gran Coupe lineup. Further, there’s the 840i xDrive Gran Coupe which almost similar to the former but comes with all-wheel drive. Then there’s the 850i xDrive which comes powered by a V8 engine and finally, there’s also a diesel which is called the 840d xDrive and it comes with a in-line six cylinder diesel engine.
BMW will only bring the 840i sDrive to India. This particular model is powered by a in-line six cylinder petrol engine which puts out 333 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to an eight-Speed Steptronic transmission. Its the same engine that’s offered in its two-door coupe sibling and here in the four door version, it can sprint from 0-100 kph in just 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 250 kph. The differences in the models are only in terms of their drivetrains and by no means will this entry level model be any less luxuriously appointed or will feature any less tech.

BMW has particularly chosen the 840i sDrive for India from the 8 series lineup because they do not see many buyers who would pay more for an all-wheel drive variant, particularly as most Indian buyers would rather use the back seat. Yes, the 8 series Gran Coupe is a GT car with some sporty credentials, but it comes with four doors and quite some luxurious rear seats with good enough legroom and headroom. That’s all what most Indian buyers look for. Besides, it will come well equipped with features like split panoramic sunroof, individual sports seats at the rear, the latest iDrive 8.0 infotainment system with touchscreen, connectivity and virtual assistant, and more.

The BMW 840i sDrive Gran Coupe would rival the likes of the Mercedes Benz CLS, the Audi A7 and the Porsche Panamera. While some of its competitors are quite more expensive, the 8 series Gran Coupe would be priced around the Rs. 80 lakh – 1 crore price bracket. It will come in a single fully loaded trim, which will also feature the company’s signature “frozen” range of matte paint finishes that have become the hallmark of the Gran Coupé models.
