Mercedes continues to expand its electrified range of new cars with this: the GLC 300 e. Based on the latest WLTP testing procedure, the plug-in hybrid SUV will achieve up to 27 miles of electric-only driving and 128mpg.
Under the skin, the GLC 300 e uses an identical petrol-electric powertrain to the Mercedes E 300 e. That means the combustion element comprises of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 208bhp and 350Nm, which is teamed up with an E-motor producing 90kw (121bhp) and 440Nm. As neither motor’s peak performance happens at the same time, the result is system output totals of 316bhp and 700Nm.

Drive is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. Using electric power alone, the 300 e can drive at speeds of up to 81mph.
The electric only range comes courtesy of a 13.5kWh battery which, through a 7.4kW charger, can be topped up at a home wallbox in 1.5 hours, or five hours with a three pin plug.
The design of the 300 e falls in line with the rest of the recently refreshed GLC family. The cabin is much the same, too, but practicality is compromised: at 395 litres, boot capacity has dropped by almost a third relative to the standard combustion-powered cars. It’s rated to tow a braked trailer weighing up to 2,000kg.
The GLC has been launched alongside the larger GLE 350 de; together forming two of a 20-strong electrified Mercedes range available to buyers by next year.
