Bajaj Unveils New Chetak Scooter, But This Time its Electric!

Bajaj has revived the iconic Chetak nameplate as an electric scooter for the modern times and it definitely picks on those retro styling cues of the original Chetak.

Today, Bajaj makes a comeback in the scooter space with the unveil of the all new Chetak. Bajaj has revived the iconic Chetak nameplate after almost 14 years but this time, its an electric scooter. This also makes Bajaj one of the first mainstream manufacturers after Hero to enter the electric space. Production of the Bajaj Chetak has already begun from September 25, 2019.

In first glance, the scooter appears like any modern scooter but when you look closely, you begin to realize the elements that have come from the original Chetak. The retro theme is accentuated by the curvy side panels and a wide front apron but it gets modern elements in the from of LED DRLs and multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The Bajaj Chetak will be powered by an IP67-rated lithium-ion battery and a swingarm-mounted motor. It also features two riding modes – Eco and Sport – with a reverse assist feature as well. It is expecetd to have a range of about 100 km. Suspension duties on the front are are taken care by a single-sided trailing arm unit that appears to have coilover set-up. There’s a monoshock at the rear and it also gets disc brakes on either ends which even feature regenerative braking. It also seems to come with tubeless tyres.

Being an electric scooter of modern age, the Chetak gets LED lighting all around with LED DRLs surrounding the headlamp cluster. However, keeping with the retro theme, Bajaj has opted for classic colors like ivory and gold for this electric scooter. Also, all the panels are made of metal as opposed to fiber or plastic and the seat has a unique cantilever design that adds a touch of class without sacrificing on practicality.

It also comes fairly well kitted in terms of technological features. It gets a fully-digital instrument cluster that allows for smartphone connectivity, over-the-air updates, and even Internet of Things (IoT) that adds geofencing, location tracking, find my vehicle, remote start and a lot more.

Bajaj hasn’t yet revealed any more technical details about the electric Chetak like how much power it would produce, the exact range, charging options, etc. Such information will be updated on a later date along with the price of the scooter. Bajaj is also considering subscription options for the Chetak. The Bajaj electric Chetak will compete against the offerings of Ather, Okinawa, Ampere and 22 Motors in India.
