The BMW F 850 R is a naked streetfighter that uses the 853cc, parallel-twin engine from the F 850 GS but will be tweaked for more top-end performance.
BMW will be unveiling four new motorcycles at the EICMA 2019. While one of them has been confirmed to be new R18 cruiser, the other three were purely speculative. Now however, some leaked patent images have surfaced on the internet and which suggests that the second motorcycle in the lineup could be the new BMW F 850 R.
BMW seems to have done quite some work on the new F 850 R as this roadster gets brand new styling but the engine will be carried over from the F 850 GS. However, the engine will be tweaked to make it Euro5 compliant and perhaps to produce more power at the top end. Currently, the 853cc, parallel-twin engine from the F 850 GS produces 90PS of power at 8000rpm and 86Nm of peak torque at 6250rpm. The F 850 R is also expected to the electronic rider aids that are offered on the GS.
In terms of design, the motorcycle draws inspiration from the R 1250 R and the BMW Roadster concept showcased a couple of years ago. The result is quite a sharp design with a very well sculpted tank and aggressive tank extensions. The proportions are spot on and the all LED looks sleek and sharp and also sits lower and closer to the forks. The images also show us a semi-digital instrument cluster but the the production spec motorcycle is expected to come with an all-digital unit like in the F 850 GS.

Going by the ADV further, the F 850 R could also be offered as a standard and a more premium Pro variant. The former is likely to get the standard suspension setup while the Pro version may come equipped with upside down forks and an electronically adjustable rear monoshock. It may also offer DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), gear shift assistant Pro, keyless ignition and RDC (tyre pressure control) as optional extras.

Looking at the tail section of the motorcycle, it looks like a sportier derivation of the G 310 R. BMW might introduce the F 850 R in the Indian market as that would allow them to compete in the growing mid-displacement streetfighter segment, which is currently occupied by the KTM 790 Duke, the Suzuki GSX-S 750, the Kawasaki Z900, and the soon-to-be-launched 2020 Triumph Street Triple RS. Expect the F 850 R to be priced around Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).
